Has anyone installed a Min-ETune system?

Re: Has anyone installed a Min-ETune system?

I think these are a pretty cool idea. Installing these would make me much more likely to learn stuff in different tunings.

Removes that whole changing guitars for one dang song deal , which is a huge P.I.T.A. Sure would make it nice for a slide guitar to go from open D , G,A and E as needed instead of having to use one tuning.

It is fantastic. I love it.

I totally appreciate that it goes against what some people would ever want to put in their guitars.

I've been playing for 30 years, and setting them up for most of that time. In the last 10 years, I've been repairing and making guitars and basses.

I hate going out of tune.

I love being able to go into DADGAD, open E, D, A, G and more, at the push of a button.

I love that it actually tunes your guitar, and you can watch it happen.

I love that it doesn't use an algorithm to change what's coming from your strings (saying that though, I've also got a James Tyler Variax which is also a great instrument and really usable live and for recording).

I also love that it is so well made and accurate - that's German engineering though.

It is a quality product that really works.

Re: Has anyone installed a Min-ETune system?

The deal breaker for me comes with the loss of the ability to tune your own guitar when they are installed. The keys don't work anymore when you have it in: it feels like you're winding up a toy and the post doesn't turn, then it just locks. If I could STILL tune the thing myself then sure, with open arms, but if I'm on stage and I need to tune up and I can't because the battery for the auto tuner happened to die? Can't handle the thought of that.
I don't know if this is how ALL the auto tuners work but the ones I have experienced all do, even the ones in the new 2015 Gibsons. What if I lost the charger? Broke it? Forgot it somewhere? Too bad, dead battery means I can't tune the guitar.
Kind of the same reason I have an issue with active pickups, just OCD I guess.

Re: Has anyone installed a Min-ETune system?

I am thinking about putting a Min-ETune on my Les Paul Traditional Pro. Has anyone done an install with these yet? I am wondering how easy it is to fit these on a LP that did not come with them.

Hi, I have an early Les Paul Classic (w no weight relief) and, of course, it did not come with a Min-eTune. It was very easy to do. It comes with a tiny wrench to install the tuning key nuts, but I use my own tools with T-handles to make it easier, always. (The open-ended wrench it comes with is 1 1/2 long and I kept dropping the damned thing.) The classy part is that the electronic unit covers all the original screw-holes your axe head came with.

A small confession: I have two of these Mine-ETune systems, so obviously I don't have a big complaint about its' usefulness. But I honestly HATE the stringing method the system requires. They claim it will handle up to a .056" string and down to a .008", but I have to use needle-nose pliers on the all tuning keys to get the strings to wrap correctly. So, I'd recommend coated strings so you don't have to change them often. Any there is NO WAY I'D USE IT ON STAGE because if you break a string, it's hell to change. And there you are on the stage fiddle-****ing around with electronics and squinting at the back of your tuning head with people who won't like the time it takes. I'd keep a duplicate guitar back-stage or on a stand right next to you so you don't have to go through that.

Be careful not to cross-thread the string-tightening nuts, because it will cost $25-30 to replace any tuning key you do that to.

I put my second system on a Taylor 810ce and it left two tuning head screw-holes out in the open...bummer. I screwed-in two of the original tiny screws flush so it looks acceptable. This was a surprise, since the LP holes were all covered and I was expecting the same with other apps. Disappointed, there.

Still, I plan to buy more of these systems, a Strat and two Line 6 Variax guitars. It will be awhile before they make the system for my 12-string, but I can hardly wait! That's where this system is REALLY needed.

If you have other questions, e-mail me back.

Hello, You say you can't tune manually with the Min-eTune installed? Both of mine do and the manual tells you that you can, as well. However, you must first tap the battery so it disconnects (won't fall out). It's definitely bad to be manually tuning while the system is active. When you finish manually tuning, just tap the battery back in. Only takes 1 second to tap it out and another to tap it back it.

The battery lasts for over 300 tunings and gives lighted reminders well-ahead of any problem. This really isn't a problem. As far as losing it, either don't, or keep an extra one charged up and in your pocket. But since the battery clicks in place, it won't fall out. Besides, you've got the head of the guitar elevated higher than the body so even if got tapped, gravity works. This really isn't a likelihood and I know I'm more paranoid than you are and I've been that way for a lot more years, so take it from a guy who uses these things, it ain't no big deal, dude.

The charger you won't need when you're playing out, so it's at home or in your car. Tronical gives you a box to keep all the charger crap, if that's your thing. I never give it a second thought. Works great, man!

Now, for the kicker: If you break a string on stage, you're toast. Keep a second one tuned up on a stage for that situ and you're gold. Or, keep a manual tuning one, if that floats your boat.

Got any more Qs? Shoot me one back and I'll help you out. I love the things in spite of these little challenges. Still, remember when you first bought a guitar. Didn't it seem overwhelming just to tune the damned thing? Fast-forward to today. If you dig alternate keys like I do, get one. If all you do is keep your axe in standard tuning and occasionally in drop-D, save your money. This is for alternate-tuning lovers, like me, Neal Young, and Joni Mitchell.

Re: Has anyone installed a Min-ETune system?

Hi, just ran into your post. I have two Line 6 Variax guitars and Tronical doesn't make the Min-ETune for those heads. Your James Tyler model is somewhat later, but I think has a similar head. Were you able to get a system for your Variax? If so, which model fits? Thanks
