More punch than a Custom 5? How about changing the magnet?
Personally, I would get the Brobucker and crank up the amp Gain a little higher.

Brobucker on the way...should have more mids, correct?
I'm pretty much going through my yearly, "I want to try a dozen pickups to see if I'm missing anything" phase. I've heard good things about these others, just trolling for opinions. It'll be good for you guys--almost new pickups soon to hit the Trading Post.

I've played all of those pickups, the C5 and the Bro in Les Pauls, the Dimarzios in Superstrats.
The DMZs are nothing like the C5 in any way, shape or form, I don't think they are what you are looking for. If you want more punch than a C5 the Bro will definitely do the trick, it has less output, but more mids and slightly spongier bass, which comes out as punch and you can definitely feel it when you play.
I think that a Brobucker will make your R8 come alive, I have one in my Les Paul and it's staying there forever! (probably:cool2

Try a Breed NECK model in the bridge of your Les Paul. They're amazing in the Bridge position.

I tried a Breed Neck in the bridge and I found it too shrill. It's a neck pickup for a reason.
The AT-1 on the other hand is a pickup I'm very bullish on right now, it's a slightly hotter than PAF pup that comes across a whole lot hotter than it is in terms of balls and authority, but it also has very nice harmonics and a complex tone. It would probably be exactly what the OP was looking for.
I love the Breed Bridge in super strats because it makes them sound a little like my LPs, but a Breed Bridge in an LP would be like (LP)^2, be interesting to try but it might cause a collapse in space-time.

I was talking about output. According to DiMarzio, 36th = ~280mv, AT-=~320mv, hardly an audible difference, but to my ear, the 36th sounds very traditional, BRIGHT PAF; the AT-1 sounds like a JB thas has been working out at the gym 8 hours a day for 6 mos.
As to where it fits in the scale, I'd put it a step up from a hot PAF, between there and a Breed. For a DiMarzio, its not un-Duncan sounding, but I find it has more authority in the lows.

I had great results with the breed neck in the bridge, so as we can see when we recommend a pup to someone it is a real crap shoot for them.
See this is a perfect example of how everyone's mileage will differ.

Yeah it depends on what you want.
Some people love standard wind PAFs in the bridge; I can't stand them and want something less shrill. I found the Breed neck even more shrill than say a '59b; it has this high end presence thing happening that made me squint.
On the other hand, in the neck I want something as bright and tight and single-coil ish as I can get.

Me too. I've fought the 'tinny bridge/muffled neck syndrome' for years. What I do is use warm amgnets and/or 250K pots to take away treble and add mids to my bridge PU's. I want a full, rich tone from them. Like you, I like neck PU's to be bright and clear. Moving they're EQ's closer to each other makes it so much easier to get an amp EQ setting that's great for both PU's.
