Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

Re: Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

I put them in my buddy's Gretsch Electromatic center block, they woke that thing up in a big way. He is a huge Setzer fan and it cuts all of that with ease. We do a pretty wide range of originals and covers and it just works. I think we did the Hot bridge, Vintage neck. Had an issue with the stock rings not fitting, I bought a set of regular Gretsch (non-EMatic) rings and I think we were good to go.

That sounds like a good combo. Are they at all P-90-ish?

Re: Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

i'll ask him to bring to rehearsal this week and give you some better thoughts on it

Re: Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

I was almost right we put in a Hot set.

Bridge is in the mid 11k's and the neck is mid 8's, DC resistance wise.

I don't get a real P-90 vibe off of them, maybe a little but it would be more like the SP90-2's, the Hot Psyclones are pretty full sounding, not as wire-y as P-90's. I would guess that the Vintage set is considerably brighter and might cut more like a P-90. These have a fair amount of top end so knock down the DC resistance and I would think the brightness goes up. The Hot neck is plenty bright for a neck, thru my buddy's Hot Rod Deluxe it is a bit brighter than I would use but thru my Orange it is fairly lush.

Hope that helps some. Any other questions let me know

Pretty neat! It sounds like they're quite a bit hotter than the TV Jones 'trons I'm currently using. Do they favor dirty tones over clean?

Re: Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

I don't really run anything so clean that I could tell you for sure but my buddy runs "edgy" clean and they sound great. I will say I thought they crushed the TV's I had in a Gretsch thru the same rig.

That's quite an endorsement! The TV's I have sound (to me) fantastic. I use a Magna'tron in the neck and a TV Clasic Plus in the bridge, fwiw.

Re: Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

Thanks Wattage. I appreciate the follow-up. I'm going to have to try a pair of these. I wish I had an arch-top to put them into.

Re: Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

Artie I’d look for a used Gretsch Streamliner, I really like them and they’re so inexpensive. You just have to buy some p/u rings that’ll adapt to filtertron size

Re: Has anyone tried Duncan Psyclone's?

"Googling" it as we speak. :)

Wow! Those are much more reasonably priced than I would have guessed. I assumed Gretsch's to be much more expensive. I really like that little Jet Club, but the Streamliners are nice too.

I like TV's but maybe for my tastes I just prefer the way SD voices things. I probably overstated "crushed" but they just didn't win me over.

I've got a vintage neck Psyclone to drop in to my Tele. Just waiting on a new pickguard and getting the routing done.
