Wow thanks for helpin me out with this!
OK how can I describe the sound I'm looking for? The night train has some good gain in it, perhaps it's not "more gain" that I'm looking for. Maybe just a similar character but tighter, and more "grind-y". It's like, the thick mode doesn't have the tone stack engaged, and boosting the bright mode sounds nowhere near the same.
Something like the night train but more "presence". Using an EQ pedal in front doesn't seem to be doing the trick, but I'll fool with that more tomorrow.
This is the kinda punk music I play, stuff like
this song by Bad Religion.
Listen to the rhythm guitarist in
this vid by the j-rock band Buck-Tick. He uses a JCM 800 and maybe some kinda dist. pedal, and I really dig the tone. It's got a lot more "cut" than my night train has at similar gain!
The lead guitarist gets a really nice solo tone but i can't even use a delay pedal with the night train because there's no FX loop.
Listen to
this song by j-rock band The Pillows. The lead guitarist uses a blues driver into an Orange OD120. The night train does this kinda sound actually pretty well. I use a Danelectro Cool Cat to Boost the night train. The gain is about 10:30, treble at about 1:00, mids at 8:00, bass 2:30, and volume at 3:00.
The night train's bright mode preamp gain isn't the best thing in the world. The magic comes from the master being past 2:00 or so. See if any of the other amps can get sounds like that with preamp gain, without necessarily having to OD the power section so much. i.e. see if you can get 3 12ax7's to sound like 2 el84s, if you get me.
Play immigrant song. Good LP + Marshall material, IMO.
For the stuff the night train does well that I'm sure it does a lil better than the rest of em, crank the night train on the thick mode. Gain at about 2:30, volume at 3:00. Play with the middle position on your LP with both of the tone controls on 1 or 0. roll the bridge pickup vol. back just a lil to about 8 or 9. Now play "sunshine of your love" and tell me it doesn't completely rule thru the night train! See if the other amps can cop that same kinda thing.
So, think about if those amps get a tighter distortion sound than the NT. Having an amp with more aggressive pre-amp gain and the ability to use it with more FX and with more tone controls at higher gain is what I'm after. Oh and channel switching is nice.
The night train is good and I wanna keep it but I'm looking for something with more modern attitude and features
