Is it me, or do bassists born in June have some monster chops?
Anthony Claiborne Jackson, born New York City, New York, June 23, 1952.
Here he is with his Fodera signature model, the Anthony Jackson Presentation contrabass guitar:
He cites people as diverse as Jack Casady, James Jamerson and guitarist Pat Martino as his influences; indeed he studied regular six-string with Martino in the late 60's.
His signature tone has a touch of flanger, and a pronounced pick attack with higher harmonic content.
He's currently a Fodera endorser, but he's played everything from Precisions to Rickenbackers.
His first sig bass was a 1975 Carl Thompson, which is now owned by Les Claypool.
Most people know him from this song. His opening riff was so on the money
, they credited him as a co-writer.
edit: this label is from a first-edition copy of "Ship Ahoy"; all subsequent pressings list AJ.
Here he is jamming with Lee Ritenour, Patrice Rushen, Alex Acuna and Harvey Mason.
Some smooth jazz with Grover Washington back in '76.
Anthony with Al DiMeola, on one of his fusion shreds, matching him note-for-note.
To name just a few...
Happy birthday to another June bass-playin' mutha!
