Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

Cool stuff. And wow, it is definitely used. Not that it can't be fixed, but that's a guitar that has been played.

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

If I ever walked into something like that at a yardsale or estate sale, I would play it daily :eyecrazy:

That guitar needs to be played and obviously common sense in care of it. How many of us have had a expensive guitar fall off a guitar stand? Not I said the Cat, NEVER (crosses fingers). When my 4 year old grandaughter is around, the Explorer's immediately go back in the cases LOL

I have heard some horror stories of headstocks and ceiling fans though... :picture:

Yeah, it's a rare bird but it's not the finest example out there by far. It will go high simply because it's not everyday that you get a complete unmolested example regardless of condition. I say a quarter mil is the reserve

Again the "if" secenario. I would trade this baby for as many killer guitars as I can get. Old active BC Rich Bich's and Mockingbirds, couple Hamer Standards, maybe a few nice Les Pauls LOL and a few bucks in the pocket, I would be mighty happy

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

are there any builds that come close? The 59 reissues or historics?

I think the epi 59s look pretty nice. Ive heard the real 59s have mojo.. wonder why and if they could ever recreate it?

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

WOW not one non-original part! $160,000 double-wow!

I wonder how many of the bidders are legit bidders who can afford to win?!

Interesting choice to sell it on ebay....

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

:O I would play that so good....

OH speaking of vintage gibsons

how much would a 62 eb-0 go for? I have one thaat was my uncles and I would like to know so I can brag about it.

I think the only way to build one that is closest to the originals is to do what this gentleman is doing: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/194271-1959-les-paul-build.html. Taking as many measurements as possible from a number of guitars, creating templates, etc. He makes some interesting finds and theories as a result. Hardly cost-effective for a big guitar company though.

He mostly builds 50s-60s Fender style (http://www.gilyaronguitars.com/), but this LP is a proto to see how things go, hence some deviations. Some of his Fender builds are also on tdpri.com.

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

Looks killer to me. I was sad to see the guitar stripped down though. The econony may suck but the rich get richer and the not so fortunate either stagnate or become worse off. There are still many folk who could buy it without batting an eyelid and probably only ever look at it once in a blue moon. On the other hand, have you seen some of the collection on the LP forum? And it would seem many originals DO get played.

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

That thing is one of the best investments in this economy. If I had that kind of money, I could buy it. It's not too different from the violins that fetch ridiculously high prices: It's got good wood, plays great and very famous players have used them. It isn't comparable to some $ 2000 Ibanez J-crafts. At least not now. Who knows if they'll be as sought after in 50 years. (Not likely since there are so many custom shops nowadays, check the Finnish Ruokangas' guitar inspired by Les Paul, here's a link to a video diary of the designing and building of the first prototypes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnM-P0vKWsc and here's a comparison of Gibson RI's, the Ruokangas Unicorn AND a '59 Les Paul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-ug6TN3oOw)

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

So it's not yet reached reserve... so: what do you think the reserve is? and do you think it'll get that high?

If I was selling it I recon a reserve of $200,000, I expect it to reach that.

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

As I scroll down the page, the only thing I'm thinking is...

"...Why did this ***hole take apart this Les Paul?"

:lmao:

you have to do that to authenticate every inch of the guitar because one reissue knob or switch tip in place of the original drops the value. think about it, if you were loaded and were going to spend that much coin on a guitar wouldn't you want to know it was all original and that all the parts are real and not replica reliced new parts? i sure as heck would want to know. plus it's not like unscrewing a pickup ring and taking a knob or tuner off actually harms the guitar in any way.

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

These threads are always so funny to me...

The guitar is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, period.

It's taken apart so the seller can prove it is what he says it is...no smart buyer in his right mind would drop a quater mill on something thats not just right.

No, there is nothing out there that nails a real 50's Gibson (Fender, Gretsch or anything else for that matter) and anyone thats ever played a golden era electric guitar will gladly tell you that. Historic/VOS and CS guitars come close but as close as they are there is somehitng special about old ones. It's somethging that can not be remade or reproduced IMO...if you want that kind of magic guy a great historic LP today and play it day in and day out for 50 years then you'll know.

Now, back to the guitar...it's great to see an old LP thats really been played! Also, the top and the colour on that one is killer, it really is a beautiful guitar!

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

As much as I'd like a '59 burst, I am NOT PayPal'ing a quarter-million dollars to anybody called Ratfart.

Re: Heads up!! A real '59 Burst Lester on eBay!

I think it's a particularly nice one.

I have as much no idea whether the vintage market is a bubble or not as everybody else. But if you have plenty cash, play guitar and want the best guitar money can buy this looks is it.

It's not much more expensive than a decent car and it certainly holds value better and has less risk of ending up on a tree.

Silly reserve, though. What are they thinking? All that will happen here is that somebody breaks the reserve with a fake account out of curiosity.

 Awesome, I never saw that! :1:

It LOOKS fantastic. But I bet a nice Epi would sound and play just as good with a set of Duncans in it.

Dude... it's at $165,000 right now. $165k will get you a SWEET car, not to mention several "decent" cars.

Or a nice house, which is always a good investment. You will not be able to make money off of this when we get to a point where the vintage guitar craze is not high.
If you hold on to it long enough you can likely make money off of it but still,
