heads up for the amp people....

Re: heads up for the amp people....

Those are sweet little amps but $750. is nuts!

Notice that there's no tone control at all...just a volume control.

The Princeton is one step up and has a tone control.

But the fewer tone controls the better on those little tweed amps...much ballsier tone without the bass control that was added for the blackface version.

Re: heads up for the amp people....

question for you if you would.....

i have a relatively low wattage amp, however, it i want to crank the clean channel, it gets really loud (annoys the family). it also gets really loud for me just by myself. how would one of these sound? i wouldnt use it for cleans really, just cranking it. and i wouldnt need it really loud either.

if this fits the bill, what would be the best year? i would want honestly the simplest one, with the least amound of stuff (ie. nobs, etc.)

Re: heads up for the amp people....

I'd look for a '73 or '74 Silverface Fender Champ. If you're patient you can score one on ebay for under $200. Eric Clapton used one to record most of the Layla album.

Blackface Champs go for alot more, but the silverface version from '73 or '74 is fine.

I think the quality of the electronics is better in the '73 and '74 Fenders...though the cabinet is not nearly as well made as earlier versions of the amp.

The blackface is the highest quality overall but expensive.

And the tweeds are simply way overpriced. $700 for a 5 watt amp is just nuts...though I think the tweed '59 Champ and tweed '59 Princeton are my favorite sounding versions of the single 6V6 "Champ" design.

Champs are CLASS A amps. One output tube...that's as class A as an amp can be. Lew
