My Jackson neck is sanded to raw wood. Do I put the decal on now and finish over it? Or do I do a coat of lacquer and then put it on, then more coats? I want it to look as legit as possible.
Assuming you are actually using lacquer, you want to seal the wood first, and sand that down with say 400 grit.
I would put one or two layers of clear on and then add the logo. Finish up with enough layers of clear that the logo is buried and you can sand/polish it out.
Thanks mang! What do you recommend for sealer? The lacquer I have is behlen top coat lacquer, is this a good product? I'm a total n00b at this, but I'm pretty good with a spray can and some sandpaper.
I would recommend reading up on spraying lacquer, there are plenty of tricks to get a good look.
You can use sanding sealer (also Behlen) or just a light dusting coat of lacquer or shellac.
Another thing to watch out for is that the lacquer does not melt your decal. Once you apply the decal, use a couple of very light coats to "seat" the decals before you go heavy.
As Ayrton says, seal it with the lacquer first. Then apply the decal.
Then, once you have applied another coat of lacquer over the whole thing you should let it dry properly and use very very fine wet/dry paper and level it all off being very careful not to go to deep and damage the decal. This step is super important.
Repeat that process a few times and once its looking nice add some more coats of lacquer to seal it all.
That is how you will get the decal so you cant see a little raised hump around it.
I dont know what this behlen is, but if thats the clear lacquer you plan on using to finish it then it should be fine.
I got quite anal about refinishing a headstock recently, only to decide I didnt even like the guitar and traded it. :kabong:
