Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I was talking to Xssive about guitars, and the issue of headstocks came up.

Myself...I find myself prefering classic looking headstocks, but will make exceptions like G&L headstocks, PRS, Grosh, Suhr, or other semi-classic looking headstocks. I tend to distance myself from the 80's hockeystick or bird head style, just because of how they change the overall look of a guitar.

What is your opinion? Are there guitars you like, but can't get past the headstock design? If the company changed the headstock, would you like the guitar more?

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I like Explorer-type headstocks on strats, but for some reason the pointy Jackson headstock turns me off.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Don't mind hockeysticks, points. Do mind Dean Vs. Do mind BCRich

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

The damebag style headstocks.

And the danelectro style aluminum Y shaped ones that look so goofey.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Even though i have one, I think the Anderson headstocks are a little faggy. Come to think of it, I also think Tom Anderson is a little faggy, too.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Schecter. I've played their guitars and they are great instruments, but the headstock throws me over the edge. I'm not a big fan of the awkward Dean ones either.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

I didn't like the Hamer headstocks at first, but the look has sort of grown on me. Not as cool-looking as the PRS headstocks, but it gets the job done. I still don't like the 80's-style hockey stick headstocks, I prefer a traditional Strat or Tele headstock for a 6 inline configuration.

Jackson and Hamer.

I agree, for the quality, the headstocks on Andersons sure to detract from the bodies-not a first class looking head for the price.

I don't really dig the Dean Hardtail series headstocks. The BC Rich pointy ones aren't that good either. G&L is iffy. Suhr and Anderson aren't that good either.

whoa! who the hell was i talking to about this on AIM the other day.......?
anyways, i wouldnt want a bcrich cause the headstock has way to many ways to killing you. and i like explorer/hockey sticks only if they are not reversed.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

well you know how i feel...i love G&Ls but can't get passed that odd headstock...where's the rest of it, what's with that little point lol? like i also said to you, i had a suhr in my hands that was just amazing killer top amazing neck but that damn bird beak looking headstock was a complete turn off for me.

i guess i'm more traditional when it comes to strats and strat clones and it has to have a fender style headstock for me...same with teles.

however a banana headstock can work too on some strat like guitars.

there are tons of headstocks i love but others just kill the guitar for me.

i wonder if i can have my luthier glue the rest of a fender headstock into a G&L where they cut off the round bottom of it lol. j/k

I'm taking you off my favorite people list.

I really can't stand G&L or other Strat/Tele clones with wierd protrusions, shapes or whatever. Pointy is out for me.

Basically, if it doesn't say Gibson, Fender, Dean, Taylor, PRS.....I'm usually turned off, but I reserve the right to turn myself on on a case by case basis.

I don't know what it is, the epiphone headstock just screams cheap (a gibson with bites taken out of it)

these I hate most though:D

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

G&L by far. I detest that little pointy thing on the underside of the headstock. I don't care HOW they sound, that little pointy thing is enough to make me not want to own one. Isn't that the lamest thing you've ever heard?!?!?! LOL

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

Some of the new Charvels have an awful headstock (that ugly strat knock-off).
Wayne's headstocks pretty ugly.

Re: Headstocks that keep you from liking a guitar.

oh, i forgot, this is pretty much THE ONLY non fender headstock on a strat or tele i like....ESP

oh and Hellion, i'm the same way, that's why i don't own a G&L

Gotta say that I hated the looks of Strats and Teles... In fact I still dislike the look of a Tele, they just look sawn off or something... The strats always looked like my grandads guitar or something...... Now, keep in mind, this is coming from a Strat activist!!!

Most of the ones listed already I dont like either....

Two similar ones that grew on me were the Ovation headstock (again I own one), and the Brian Moore headstock... Especially the darker colored ones with the lighter grain wood in the curve part......

My favorite headstock is the Gibson Custom that is bound, and has the inlays in the center.... Found on many acoustics, LP Customs, LP Supremems, and SG Supremes....A GREAT looking headstock!!! And the Martin headstock that is bound, as well...
