i have an sg iwth a mahogony neck and body and rosewood fretbooard. Im looking for a nice heavy metal tone with higher output than my crapp stock humbuckers. i want to hav nice harmonics and play with drop tunings. I wan t a sound like will adler(lamb of god, Dan donogen(disturbed), metallica, and killswitch engage. iwas looking an invader/jazz comco or an sh-6/ jazz combo
i was maybe thinkjing of getting a dimarzio super distortion but idk ir a a dimaezio classic airpickup I dont no

suggestions? (dont suggest jb i dont like it)

Re: heavy metal in sg

Try an Invader. My front line stage SG has an Invader in the bridge position. It roars...

Re: heavy metal in sg

I would try a Duncan Custom (SH-5). It can cover a wide range of heavy metal tones, is tighter and more balanced than the JB, and handles drop tunings well. For metal, it's very nice.

Re: heavy metal in sg

im running my sg through a digitech rp350 effects processor and then to a marshall mg50dfx.

Also i was looking at a dimarzio diactivater in the bridge and a paf joe in the neck but i dont know whether to go dimarzio or seymour duncan i think thati might go wit sd's but like i said im not sure

Re: heavy metal in sg

For drop tunings, avoid the invader! Once again, AVOID IT! A good pickup but, with low tunings it sounds like total mush.

I would go Distortion/jazz myself for that.

Re: heavy metal in sg

I'd go with the distortion, I had an invader in a sg and hated it, in a strat it sounded decent but just way too dark for me. I also had an 81 in an sg and that thing was a metal monster

Re: heavy metal in sg

Distortion/Jazz

i cant recommend this pair enough for that kind of music, ive installed those in some gibsons and they are great for anything metal and sound great with drop tuning

You are not going to sound like any of those guys you want to sound like playing through a crap solid state combo amp...sorry to be the one to tell you that.

1) Save up your money

2) Buy a good amp

3) Then play with pickup combos till you find a tone you like.

Oh and what you didn't like this thread?

Look here's the truth (and some people are going to have a hard time with this)...

I can play a $100 strat copy through my 5150 head and bring the house down.

I can play a $1000 Gibson V w/$300 of aftermarket pickups through a cheap solid state combo amp and not get a tone worth playing for a house.

Plus I bet one of my Tube Amp heads that you or most people, shoot even me...for what you want to sound like...couldn't tell what pickup I was using with one of my Amps with the master at 6 or above anyway.

Just my $.02

there's a lot of truth in this.

save up for an amp.

now, if you have an Epiphone SG and are really itching for new pickups, you can get the "boxed set" of Duncan Distortion pickups for usually cheaper than buying 2 individual pickups. it's called the Distortion Mayhem set. the Distortion neck is lower output so it matches with the bridge.

check this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Seymour-Duncan-...9|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:2|294:50

$110 shipped for both pickups. add $15 for some new potentiometers and you're ready to rock

Re: heavy metal in sg

As much as I don't want to sound discouraging I have to go with the comments about the amp. I'd be surprised if you could really tell what ANY pickup sounded like through one of those things. A Gibson SG is a good start (my main guitar is an SG with a JB in the bridge and sounds amazing through my Cornford amp). I'd say sell the amp and put the money towards a tube amp. You can get some very good tube amps new for not too much (some Peaveys, Laneys etc) and there seems to be some really good stuff available used. Personally, if I was in the market, I'd definitely look at a Kustom Coupe - amazing sounding amp for not a whole lot of cash.

Re: heavy metal in sg

cant recommend?

no.. "can't recommend this pair enough" as in... i recommend this time and time and i keep recommending it as its a great set for metal

and +1 to the amp thing... it sucks to admit but amp will have a huge impact on your sound much more than any pickup could ever do. IMO the chain of tone priority is AMP > Guitar > Speaker > FX/Stomp Boxes > Pickup > Guitar hardware > Strings > Pick > Cable... and im forgeting stuff and list goes on too... alot can affect your overall tone and somewhere in there you cant forget your fingers, as they are a bigger part of tone than most people realize... but as i was saying your weak link here is your amp and is definitely the major if not the most important factor in the tone chain, much more than the guitar itself imo and as you can see theres alot more major components that make a bigger difference in tone than the pickups...

Where not trying to discourage you here, but more point you towards the right direction and getting a new amp would definitely help your tone a heck of a lot more than any pickup. Theres a bunch of cool affordable and good sounding amps, and you don't necessarily "need" to go tube either, some solid state amps would sound a whole lot better than your mg. Heck i don't like em but some Line6's would better an improvement and allot of people get killer tones with them and their not expensif.
