i have an epi sg and have a marshall mg50 dfx. i currently am using a digitech rp350 processor. i dont want the processor and was wondering what is a good heavy metal/ metal core setup. i want all pedals, compressors, distortions, reverbs, eq's. i want a tone like kill switch engage, metallica, disturbed, black label society, godsmack. so if u cud let me know, that would be very much appreeciated

Re: Heavy metal setup??

Getting all those tone from those guys is not gonna be easy with only one or two drit boxes. There is a big tonal diff between some of them !

Honestly, i would get a valve amp first and then look into pedals.
With a good vlave amp, 9 out of ten times, you get killer reverb too, meaning you do not even have to look at a reverb box !

Pedals that you can start to look into though :

MXR 10 band EQ
MXR ZW-44 OD
Boss DS-2 (very underrated pedal)
MI Audio Metal Zone
A wah of some sort

. . . it also depends what you funds will allow you to do !

Hope this helps !

Re: Heavy metal setup??

Well first of all you can get a very good heavy metal tone without any pedals, a lot of metal guitarists don't really use anything except a boost maybe. They may have other stuff in their chain (delay, chorus, etc) but they probably don't really use it much. Most of their tone comes out of the amp, so my advice would be start looking for a new amp, you could find a used one for a pretty decent price

kill switch engage, metallica, disturbed, black label society, godsmack.

Either get A LOT of pedals, or keep the multi-fx and really learn to tweek that beast. I think a lot of people underestimate the power of even little multi-fx's these days because they don't spend time really working the controls. That thing must have three eq's available through a given patch and who knows how many distortion flavors!

Re: Heavy metal setup??

What's your budget? You could go crazy buying a bunch of different guitars, pickups, pedals, amps and the like to chase each different sound you want. However, with some patience and a bit of work, you could also probably settle on one or two favorite guitars, a few pedals and a single amp and go a long way.

that's me right there:D
if you want to be able to achieve some semi-believable tones as far as those bands go, i'd highly reccomend an equalizer, an overdrive pedal, and a distortion pedal. those three types of pedals in combination with eachother will go a long way to acheiving a wide array of heavy tones.

Re: Heavy metal setup??

heres what i got, and i have en epi sg with seymours in it, this was my biginers rig n it was ok sounding....

epi sg -
fender frontman or something very old amp had a few sticky buttons n allround did not sound to good.
with a boss mega ditortion or something....

i then upgraded my epi sg to have a jb n jazz pick ups... best move i ever did with that guitar.

then i gave the old fender away, which iw as then to be returned with :P

i got a peavey banditt 120.... which rocks pretty hard.

then i got my boss me 20 multi fx which is pretty kkiller to it is so versitile, but you must have patience to get your amp and pedals right, i have had them for over a year now and am just getting the sound i want right....

then i got my schecter... which is ****ing rad.

so patience is a virtue... you must upgrade in small steps if you have to save for these items like i do, and i still am. i would love to go all out n get a valve amp but its not practical for me as they are a pain to lug around... but if you have the moeny go all out dude.. let us know what ya end up with.

Or an old school 5150 half-stack.

This kid has asked the same basic question in three threads.

To the OP :

Seriously, if you wanna play a real man's metal rig, this is the holy triangular grail :

Any one of these fine axes :

That is what i do too - because i am NO metal player, but when u want to piss of my friends (or friends of my friends) that think they are the "Big Guns", because they have a dedicated metal rig, i do this :

SG w. A2P's -->Death By Audio Fuzz War -->Death By Audio Interstellar OD -->T-Rex Mudhoney -->Bassman (ab165) into two 1960B cabs.

It always put a smile on my face when i see their faces . . . :D

http://www.deathbyaudio.net/ - not the new deluxe OD / the two knob unit.

what i do for metal... is not play my metal zone:D seriously though, for metal-type tones i go:
sg faded > ds-1 > mxr classic dist. > boss eq > windsor head 'n' cab flat-EQ'd with clean tone. sounds like metal to me anyways:)

Re: Heavy metal setup??

That MI Audio pedal that SlowGroove recommended is Tube Zone, not Metal Zone.
I think that you shoul test the new Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Mayhem tube distortion pedal made for metal.
