Heavy pups in hollow bodies

So I noticed recently Gibson gave Tom Delonge a new sig that is similar to an ES-335 in shape with the hollow body, but with a dirty fingers pickup. Has anyone tried a heavy pup like the Dirty Fingers or Invader in a hollow body or semi-hollow body? How is it tone-wise??

Is that just with the heavy ones or would there still be a lot of feedback with something more calm like a JB or Custom

Feedback is only really a problem if the guitar has f-holes, which the DeLonge does not.

Side note: Tom DeLonge sucks ass.

Haha...can't disagree with that, but I liked his signature Strat so I figured he might be onto something with this new Gibson (Btw, it does have F holes). So what kind of hot pickup wouldn't create major feedback in a semi-hollow body? Would the JB work?

I think you might run into less feedback with a high-output pickup, supposing you're going for a heavy tone. You wouldn't need to dial in as much gain from your amp to get there.

Then again this is pure conjecture on my part.

i have bill lawrence L500-XLs in my ibanez am-50 semi hollow (w/ f holes) .... they ar epretty hot and i have no feedback issues ... very happy with the tone

I think it´ll work. Imo it´s not important how hot the pup is but the amount of gain you use..dunno..a random thought :eek13:

I used a Custom Custom bridge pickup in my Hamer Monoco Super Pro for a long time and loved it. As long as the neck pickup is vintage output (I used a Seth Lover) you'll get a nice clear tone for rytyhm and a stronger and higher output tone for soloing. Best of both worlds. Lew

I had a C5 in my hollow Alleykat and had no feedback problems.

I could be horribly wrong but I was under the impression that they filled the cavities of the Delonge '335 with some kinda foam to avoid that feedback...

You can put pretty much anything in a SEMI-hollow. I've had a Custom Custom in my 355 for years and it's perfect. In my experience, semi-hollows are only slightly more feedback-prone than a solidbody, though BB King did have the Lucille designed without f-holes.

It's the archtops (fully hollow) that put tight limits on what you can use.

You know what's funny?

My Sheraton with P-90's is more prone to feedback than my hollow Alleykat with a Gibson mini 'bucker at the neck and a C5 (covered & unpotted).

Maybe it's the smaller body and flat back, but I can push the 'kat harder than the Sheraton without squealing.
