Hello all!

Hey everyone,
I'm new here but have looked in quite a bit. I finally decided to post with some questions for you all if you all don't mind.

I'm new to Seymour Duncan pups, I've always been a EMG guy, I just got a Jackson Soloist with SD pups in it. It has a JB a STK1 and I put in a lil 59 in the neck. I love the 59 and the STK1 but the JB is vary different than what I am used to (EMG 81, 89) the JB seems really nasally and a bit shrill (I know how can I say that with an EMG 81 in one of my guitars) is there a better pickup that has a tight bottom end and clean (not piercing highs) and a good solid smooth midrange. The JB breaks up a bunch with my amp.

I love playing just about everything, mostly metal though. I need a pickup with some ooomph and a solid punch. But not a bag full of nails to the head.

I really like a clean smooth distortion (Maiden from the 7th son era) but I like a heavy tight punchy tone.

Here's where it gets rough, I use Gallien Krueger solid stade amps, which have a bit of a bite to them lots of midrange and treble. The EMGs eat it up while the JB just shrieks (in a bad way) and if I eq it it gets muddy.

Some thing that can handle solid state and stay rounded not muddy.

WOW Horribly long first post (sorry) :smack: But any advice would be awesome.

Re: Hello all!

Howdy! And welcome. :)

I'd take a look at a Duncan Custom or Duncan Distortion.

Both use a ceramic magnet.

The Duncan Custom is the same pickup as the Custom 5 and Custom Custom only it's made with a ceramic magnet.

The Duncan Distortion is the same pickup as your JB only instead of an alnico 5 magnet it uses a ceramic magnet.

Re: Hello all!

Check out the Custom. Or, get a ceramic magnet, and pop it in the JB, give the Distortion a shot for free :)

Re: Hello all!

Yes, i agree with lew, but he forget´s to mention just one thing that changes a little the sound, the duncan distortion has different polepieces than the Jb
Q:p
right Lew?
i would go with the Duncan Custom. The Full Shred has tight Bass, but not too much bass. and it may be a little shrill in the BAD WAY on your guitar
A Duncan Custom Is my recomendation.

Re: Hello all!

Thank you all for the responses! I had heard the Custom was a bit muddy am I wrong? And will a solid state amp be a big concideration in what I get?

I had a tech friend of mine recommend a custom 5, what's the big differences.

Re: Hello all!

Ceramic vs Alnico magnets is really the only difference? Who knew going to passives would be so challenging. :burnout:

Re: Hello all!

go with the custom. The Custom 5 is a custom witha alnico 5 magnet. The Custom5 has more highs then the JB and scooped mids. Go for the Custom.

Re: Hello all!

no just a bit compared to the custom 5 and cutom custom

This is how I look at the variatons in the Custom series

Custom5:-
Bass: 8
Mids: 4
Trebel:8

Custom:-
Bass: 7
Mids: 6
Trebel:9

Custom Custom:-
Bass: 3
Mids: 7
Trebel: 7

Re: Hello all!

I wouldn't ever say that I've heard a pickup with scooped mids, and the Custom definately doesn't have 'scooped' mids. While the bass and treble is a bit more prominent, the mids are not 'scooped.'

Re: Hello all!

With accentuated highs and lows its not a one trick pony is it? What I mean is its not muddy and shrill right?

It can do other things than metal?
