Help! 4x12 Series-Parallel, WGS and Emi

It's my first time to own a 4x12. I'd like to wire my 2x WGS Veteran 30 and 2x Eminence V1216 in an "X-Pattern".

Am I doing it correctly?

See drawing I did based on Mesa's diagrams

Yup, that's series/parallel. You might want to make sure the polarity between the emis and the WGS are the same, though. You can do this by connecting a 9 volt battery to the terminals and see if the speaker cone moves in or if it moves out.

I can use a multimeter to check polarity right?

If the polarities are different, should I be connecting positive to positive to wire the 2 brands in a series?

I don't think you can check polarity with mm in this case? If the polarities are different, act as if the + is - on one the speaker types.

Saw some videos on YouTube... They use a 9v battery like you said. Eminence's website recommended 1.5v.

I think I'll do the polarity test on all speakers before mounting on the cab.

I saw this wiring from premier guitar though. It's supposed to be a vintage Marshall 4x12 wiring. The series wiring goes top to bottom instead of left to right. Should I go for this instead?

If I'm just using a single 1/4" input jack or Speakon, that's how I wire them.

It doesn't matter, they are the same.

My other consideration was, if 1 of the speakers fail, I won't burn my amp.

With that regard, I guess the Marshall vintage wiring is better? Or no?

Happy Thanksgiving!

They’re pretty much the same thing. Either way you’ve got two series loops in parallel.

Re: Help! 4x12 Series-Parallel, WGS and Emi

I believe that Scumback claims slightly better bottom end with the "vintage" wiring. Maybe because it effectively increases the wire gauge. Personally, I don't think it makes a lick of difference.

Re: Help! 4x12 Series-Parallel, WGS and Emi

Well, as it turns out, the cab soldered the input wires and covered it with some glue. I didn't wanna mess with it so I had to go with the Mesa wiring.

Luckily the Emi were in phase with the WGS. The latter were closer to 16ohms though, and the total impedance of all 4 speakers was 14.5ohms.

The cab was a b!tch though, with those permanent bolts and threadlockers on the nut. It didn't help that I didn't have a ratchet wrench too.

Emis got a weird frame which doesn't give enough space when I turn the nut. It's also a lighter gauge frame and was worried denting it as I hit it with my wrench a few times.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Help! 4x12 Series-Parallel, WGS and Emi

The 14.5 ohms is the total DC resistance (DCR). It's perfectly normal for a/the speakers DCR to be slightly lower than it's/their nominal rated impedance. The impedance varies with frequency.

Re: Help! 4x12 Series-Parallel, WGS and Emi

Right. Resistance. :)

I learned a little about impedance when I saw an Andrew Jones interview. He was saying, "don't worry about 6 ohms vs 8 ohms". I was just surprised the Emi was like 1.5 ohms lower than the label on the back. The WGS was very close to 16.
