HELP a noob with HSH Fishman Fluence Classic Open Core HB + Single Width SSA

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums, and to electric guitar playing.

I posted this post on UG forums some time ago, but couldn't get any replies, so I thought maybe I could try my luck here.

I recently got myself a cheap super strat style guitar with HSH routing, and I'm thinking of spending a bit of dough on modifications and upgrades.

I have been playing the acoustic guitar primarily, so I'm a stranger to the world of SCs and HBs, and even more so the wiring options available.

Recently I've been reading that Fishman made some very interesting pickups, and was interested to give them a try. However, I'm confused by how the HSH config would work with this set of pups.

1. Are HSH pups wired in series or parallel? (Like I said, I'm really noob at this...)

I believe Strats are wired in parallel, and HBs are usually in series. (I may be wrong...) So I'm really confused about how the series/parallel thing works in a HSH setup.

I understand that I cannot change the series/parallel wiring within each Fluence HB since it doesn't have 4 connectors, but can I add a switch to trigger series/parallel wiring between each pup? Are there any differences in sound? Should I bother to do so? Can the sounds be emulated by any of the 3 voices or coil tapping?

2. Can each Fluence pup be switched In/Out of phase?

Will there be any difference in sound? Again, should I be bothered with it?

3. Can I coil split/tap within each voice?

What about voice 3, the "single coil" voice? Can that be "tapped" to either side?

4. This is purely an aesthetic question: Can I add a pup cover to the Open Core pups? or change the cover on the SSA pup?

I've seen the product page on Sweetwater that suggests the SSA's cover is changable, but have not found anything about the HBs.
I'm asking because the original Classic HBs have a gold version, but didn't have a "voice 3" option. I do intend to bling up my pups.

Upon doing a search of the forums, I didn't find anything that can answer the above questions...

Any experts on the subject able to chime in with some info?

There’s a lot there to get into, so I’ll try my best with what I know.

Hsh is usually series when selecting the humbuckers and split or parallel when selected together. Some have switching for inner coils, outer coils parallel and other craziness.

The fishman fluence classics have 2 versions, the regular and the open coil.

The regular version have covers, have 2 voices but are split-able, and have a high frequency roll off. You can split to inner or outer coils but need an 3 way switch for each. If you split the coils on these they are run through the whichever voicing is selected. To split the coils you need to add a wire or 2 to the pads on the back.

The open core versions have the same 2 voices but instead of a high frequency roll off they have a 3rd voice with a split coil. I suppose you could put a cover on them, but cheap covers muffle the sound. I’m not sure what covers would fit though. The spacing is different between brands.

With a 4 pole strat switch you could have it auto split when combined with the single coil if you want that. You could use a regular switch too and push pulls or mini switches for either voicing, and get a lot of combinations.

The single coil ssa has only on voice rather than 2 single coil voicing like the single width set. The single coils are stacked coils so they are extra tall. Covers for them need to be extra tall and the poles are smaller than normal so they may have some space around them.

I’m not sure if they can be run out of phase. With all of the combinations available I’ve never looked into it, the other sounds are too good and oop has never done anything for me.

Also a strat with hsh can have a pick guard for pretty much any combinations of pickups put on it.

I have the classic set and a strat with single coil set. The 2 voices are great in themselves and very versatile.

go to the Fishman sight....they have about 20 different wiring schemes that show you what can be done...from a quick read about half of what you want to do can't be done with any actives...

How would you compare them to the real deal single coils?
