I play hard rock, r&b, and country. When I sing it's usually hard rock or R&B though I have placed done 2 dance tracks in Europe - go figure.
I know what Lew means, but the PG has some hot sauce on it IMHO ESP if you compare it to the APH1.
I have owned 4 APH1s and just recently went PG on LEW's advice (on this forum), as well as Scott over at SD. I think the PG sounds open and great but it's too rude to call it sweet. The Seths sounded sweet, the APH is fat and sweet, but the PGs always have this bit of hot sauce on them (more in the bridge than the neck). It's NOT a bad thing. I have had Dimarzios that had some fizz to them. THIS IS NOT FIZZ. It's a sort of kick to it that cuts thru. It's that hot sauce that keeps it from being
I didn't mean to say they are EN FUEGO, just some hot sauce. You gotta understand, I can eat some spice, so a little kick doesn't burn my mouth, it just tastes good. When you are used to hot sauce, then anything less tastes bland.
My best comparison is that the attitude and mids on PG made any amp I play thru kinda have a little Marshall midrange attitude. I liked that. For me it's like some weird pedal that makes even my Rivera or a Fender have a little bold attitude. APHs are too sweet and classic and fat with some chimey top and sponge, so they don't offer that same attitude. The PGs have sponge but not like the APH. I always felt that SLASH has the POSTER CHILD tone for the APH. I can hear it soooooo clearly.
I can tell you this - my old Marshall, a Variac, and mayyyybe an OCD (or maybe not), Vintage 30s or G12H30s and you have this classic brown sound type tone that is amazing. I have A/B'd it against many other amp combos and pup combos and every time I get a gig, that's the request I get. I am not sure if it's people just trippin' bc they see vintage gear - but it does have mojo.
The PGs are unique, where as the APH is very bread and butter to me. The APH is a well priced, great sounding pup that works in almost anything, as long as you don't need shredding cut and grind from a pup. The PGs are amazing but some people actually HATE them. I can see why, there is a high mid thing that you CANNOT DIAL OUT. Either you love it, can live with it, or it's not your sound.
I will add lastly (in this rambling) that the PG's are a lot tighter under extreme gain. It's easier to do the metal CHUNK.
