HELP!!! Amp trouble...

I'm having some serious issues.

I use a Peavey Classic 30 w/ jj tubes + extension cab (no internal speakr). I plug in, turn it on, let it warm up for a minute. Works perfect and sounds great for about 30 seconds. Then the volume drops, and it seems to switch from the clean to the OD channel very quietly.

I tried taking out the two outer power amp tubes and putting them in place of the middle ones. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I've always thought that when in the channel V2 and V3 are employed, and when clicking to the OD V1 and V4 are added in. Anyway, this didn't work.

Could this be a preamp tube problem? (I'm really hoping it's going be this simple) Maybe one has just had enough? I usually run the amp on the clean channel with the volume at about midnight.

All suggestions are more then welcome!! Thanks!

doesnt really sound like a fuse problem but I would find a schematic for your amp online and check all the fuses, external and internal. Make sure you unload the charge in the capacitors before fiddling around if you dont have a tech do it.

CD,

You could try sticking a cable in the effects loop. Effects loop jacks get dirty and can need cleaning. I actually just had to do my yearly to a Marshall combo sitting nearby.
The second thing I would do is change the phase inverter, the preamp tube nearest the power tubes.
It is always possible it could be tubes, yes.

Well, I turned on the amp again today and started messing around and it didn't do that again.

Instead it's really flabbery? sounding. (lackofabetterword) I strum a chord hard and it has sort of the same characteristic of a blown speaker. The volume didn't drop.

I tried putting a stock sovtek tube in V3, and this helped a little bit (while brightning up the amp and making the amp sound very harsh) but the bad sound is still there. Could it be all my preamp tubes that need replacing?

I don't plan to keep this amp for much longer, but I would like to get it in good condition for it's next owner. What do you think I need to do to get it back on it's feet?

thanks again for any input
