Help an idiot out.

Re: Help an idiot out.

When I worked at a grocery store last summer, I was asked by a customer "How much does this 2lb bag or carrots weigh?" When I told another customer that we were out of red bell peppers she looked at me and asked "Why?"

I would have looked at her deadpanned and said "Locust"

Re: Help an idiot out.

To bring this issue back up, here's a picture of the nut. I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like it is in backwards.. uploadfromtaptalk1430858133010.jpg

Re: Help an idiot out.

Might be backwards, but mostly looks to me like it's just broken. And DEFINITELY the source of your High-E rattle. Google the super glue nut slot fix and you'll be fine.

Re: Help an idiot out.

I'm guessing it's as simple as dropping some super glue in that slot and calling it a day? I know it's not the truss rod because the rest of the strings are perfect height, the high e is super low

Re: Help an idiot out.

Almost. You want to use the super glue to build the nut back up, and then use a file (or something acting as a file) to re-cut the slot to the right dept. But, yeah, I guess if you were careful and slow enough, you could just do it as a purely additive process, stopping often to let it dry and then check the string height. Would be a PITA, but should work. Eventually.

I Googled it and people are using baking soda? If that sounds right, sounds like I fill the slot with baking soda, and then wipe away the excess, drop in a drop of super glue, and let it dry (I put the baking soda to the correct height) and then after it dries I re-string it, sound okay?

Re: Help an idiot out.

Uh... Is it just me or are the strings wound around the post the wrong way?

Re: Help an idiot out.

Yeah for some odd reason I string them backwards in the posts. That's just a personal thing. Does it effect the guitar in anyway?
Could cause tuning issues. A Fender headstock pretty much has a straight pull configuration and the nuts are cut for such. Pulling them at a sideways angle like that could cause binding at the nut which would cause things to go sharp when you bend or things to go wonky with trem usage.

Okay, simple enough, I'll re-string it the other direction. This is the only guitar setup that way, and the strings have only been in for a few days, so no biggie. Thanks for the info

Re: Help an idiot out.

I've seen straight glue or mixed with almost any powder, including dust ground from another nut, which seems a bit excessive in most cases.

Re: Help an idiot out.

I'm just over cautious with my guitars. And I'm just now starting to do my own work on them so I'd rather ask advice from gurus like you guys before I try it myself haha. Hopefully this wasn't too stupid of a question

you want to build up confidence and skill to work on instruments.. go to a pawnshop and pick out a guitar AND mod it to hell...It helps

Re: Help an idiot out.

ok so just a wild supposition here. No offense intended, OP.

If dude is unsure enough about working on guitars to be able to find the right damn allen key/hex wrench for a saddle height screw, then he really should probably NOT be attempting nut repairs without a TON of learning and practicing.

No hurt feelings haha. Hence the title of the thread. But I'm really just starting to dabble in working on my own stuff, it'll be a good skill to have I believe.

Re: Help an idiot out.

absolutely. just... learn from books and videos, acquire the right tools, and then practice your techniques, before moving onto live guitars.

Re: Help an idiot out.

Just buy a new nut? Use it as an excuse to upgrade to a well cut bone nut or whatever material you prefer.

Re: Help an idiot out.

TUSQ nuts are about $15 and super simple to do. One of the more common mods I make on my guitars.

Re: Help an idiot out.

++ on the Tusq nut.
But please spend a little more and get a TusqXL - they made and pressed with permanent silicon. I can do a good job, taught myself, and work as well as a JBeck roller nut or any pro set up. Now, I pat myself on the back for having the nut work so well, however, behind the breakpoint of the string from the nut, the whole thing looks like the worst piece of s**t you have ever seen. I only had the last tool needed for the break point but had to use concrete construction tools to get me close enough. Usually, (I have 4 in use) they come cut really well and it is just a matter of shimming them.
Allen wrench, I needed a small one but can't drive so I decided to just cut one end of my bigger Allen wrench down with a very strong flat file. Ba-Boom, got it down to perfect in 15 minutes. Now I velcro each size I need on the back of my headstock.
Had a guy years ago make my high E taller on my nut with powdered bone and super glue. He's gone, who knows where, but I couldn't see the difference between his fix and my nut. But he did raise it and it was a thing of beauty. When the whole needed replacing is when I got the TusqXL. Talked to the owner of the product and gave me a free one for buying one. Great guy. He said if I did not like the free one, keep the one that I bought and get a refund from where I got it.
