HELP - ENGL E530 PreAmp Tube Replacement

Re: HELP - ENGL E530 PreAmp Tube Replacement

It's 83 vs 803
Double check me but I think the 803 is slightly less gainy w more headroom
83 is typical 12ax7

Buy and try my friend

Yes and it may help the Fizz a lot-mine had to be on for a few hours in a H@K Tubeman but then smoothed out great- no fizz, no fuzz.

Less gain with JJ803S not a factor since I could not use the higher Gain before- too fuzzy- now I can.

The 803 is long platted JJ's. Usually lower gain, more head room and sound better.

83s are short platted, muddy, dull sounding pres

Exactly. The only good thing (IMHO, of course) about the JJ ECC83S is its longevity. But it's like having a spork that will never wear out. It's just not a good tool to begin with.

Interesting to hear the results- I never played one or heard one of these live but they always on clips sound as you describe.........

If you can get this pre to sound smooth and round with a Tube swap-I'd like to know- didn't think it was designed for that....
