Help finding the proper guitar between $500 - $1000

Hello I am looking for a new electric guitar and I am wondering what the best one is.

I recently have been looking at

http://www.stevesmusic.com/guitars-and-basses/electric-guitars/esp-ec-401-ltd

or

http://www.stevesmusic.com/guitars-and-basses/electric-guitars/schecter-hellraiser-c-1

I have a budget and I believe anything above $1500 is a little to much unless your like Slash or something but I like under $1000 and upgrade the pickups and such...

Now if both of these aren't that good and you know of an instrument that us better please tell me. I like to play blues and metal so I will need versatility.

Thanks

^ That isn't the same model, but it's still a good option.

Anything from Schecter's Blackjack line is good. The ATXs have Duncan Blackout pickups and the SLS have Blackouts or a Full Shred bridge and Jazz neck pup. And the ebony boards are, as far as I can tell, good quality.

Pigbacon is correct; the link I posted is not the same model that EPI originally asked about.

The link I posted is the kick-@$$ one that my nephew had. It's a BEAST for very little money.

Bottom line, you can get a lot of bang for the buck -- and a lot of versatility -- with a Seymour-loaded Schecter. If I had to buy one guitar right now, to do it all, in that price range, it would probably be either a Schecter or maybe one of the new Jacksons.

Ltd has a bunch of stuff in that price range that rocks too. A lot of which have duncan and emgs in them.

Re: Help finding the proper guitar between $500 - $1000

I have an LTD EC-401w. It began life with the ubiquitous EMG-81/-60 pickups. It sounded better with EMG-81X/-85X or Seymour Duncan Live Wire Classic II pickups. I also elected to change the capacitor on the Tone control.

The LTD and Schecter are both manufactured in the same factory - Cort, Indonesia. I am at a loss to understand why one is fifty per cent more expensive than the other. EMG dual mode pickups are not enough to explain things. Perhaps, the Schecter comes with a case included?

Both of those guitars are good just not in the way that a Fender Custom Shop or AVRI is good. I would happily play either. (I own one, FFS!)

If you are concerned about perceived value for money, consider buying pre-owned and customising. The only major difference between the LTD 400 series and the next series down is the American pickups and pots. Why not snap up a 295 series and upgrade to the American pickups of your choice?

Surprised at all the love here for Schecter in that price range.

Epi, what are you looking to play with your guitar? Is this your first guitar, are you upgrading from something where you can tell us what you like/don't like about it? The 'Under $1,000' category is HUGE, and I've acquired every guitar in my sig for less than $700 each (though a couple do/did list over $1,000), and all are absolute quality. You can get a real Gibson, Fender or any other brand easily for that kind of scratch, especially if you're willing to show a little patience. I recommend you give us a little more insight to you as a player, but if you want general advice, find your nearest Guitar Center, try out every sub $1,000 guitar that catches your eye, and don't worry so much about brand name, or even price.

Re: Help finding the proper guitar between $500 - $1000

There are very, very few guitars I would even consider in that price range over something used. The 500-1000 range is the total sweet spot for finding good deals on used higher-end guitars.

Don't be afraid to buy used, but definitely check your local GC's/pawnshop used wall if they have one. I probably sound like a GC promoter at this point, but I'll put more stock in any guitar I can play over the 'bay any day. That said, my RG470 came from eBay and it was an absolutely steal, and a real player. My ESP came from a pawn shop, and my Saber 570 came from the used GC wall.

Re: Help finding the proper guitar between $500 - $1000

Not everyone is a Gibson fan:D And with my recent bad luck from ebay i strongly suggest trying the guitar when getting used. Not everything clear at photos. But i agree about getting used one , so many good deals but starters dont like the idea of getting your first guitar used(i did)

Re: Help finding the proper guitar between $500 - $1000

Buying a nice guitar on eBay is great, if it works out for you. Personally, I won't buy a guitar that I haven't played, and I don't trust other people on eBay as far as I could throw the entire Internet.

Re: Help finding the proper guitar between $500 - $1000

It seems you want a two humbucker, mahogany, set neck import. IMHO, there are two options that are hands down the best quality guitars for the money with those specs. I'm talking about the G&L Tribute Ascari GTS for Gibson scale, or the G&L Tribute Fiorano GTS for Fender scale. They are well made, they come with quality hardware and pickups, and they have factory-installed coil splitting. Even at $500 new, they're an enormous bang for the buck. Used, they are $300 to $350. That's insane for what you get.

Re: Help finding the proper guitar between $500 - $1000

I must mention the PRS SE line. They are awesome guitars for the money. But, if you buy used, you could buy a US made Gibson. Heck, if you waited for the right deals you could get a PRS SE AND a Gibson.
