I recently bought this pair of SD (jazz?) humbuckers and I would like to properly identify and date them. Can anyone help? Photos below -

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

Welcome to the forum!

According to this, the top one is a Jazz neck built by Martha Cameron. I am sure someone here would have a great idea how old these actually are. I can't quite make out the label on the bottom one.

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

Mincer, many thanks. The bottom pickup label indicates it is a matching JB-M - but the print is pretty faded.

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

jazz neck, jb bridge. sweet set of rare double cream duncans

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

If "JN" is for "Jazz Neck" but "JB" is for "JB", what's the abbreviation for "Jazz Bridge"? Inquiring minds want to know, although I'm not sure why. It's not like there's a ton of Jazz Bridge pickups floating around out there.

That double-cream JB/Jazz set is really cool. I won't tell Larry if you won't.

My Jazz bridge is "JMB J" : John Milner Bridge - Juarez.

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

Many thanks for all your helpful info. To summarise so far -

- Appear to be a matching set of double cream SD humbuckers
- Jazz neck (JN) and JB Bridge, both built by Martha Cameron

Any ideas on the approx age? Would this make them sometime late '70's? Does the SD logo stamp on the back help date them, I have noticed this is different on later pick-ups.

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

They are made between 1983 and 1988.

Btw: Are you TMG from Germany?

Thanks Hammerfan. What brings you to that conclusion on the date range? Just interested to know.

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

Hi TMG,
they have the first version of the back logo without the Made in America

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

OK thanks. So why would that not make them older than '83?

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

Older than that there wouldn't be a stamped SD logo on the plate and the sticker would have the full model name and no winder initial.

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

The other logical question is: why is it not younger than 88? A: Then it should read 'Made in America' on the baseplate.

Re: Help identifying vintage double cream SD humbuckers

"JMB" = Jazz Model Bridge

As for the OP's pickups, those are clearly from the '83-'85 time period. As Beaubrummels mentioned, anything pre-'83 will typically have an unstamped baseplate (no logo, just the ink-stamped label).

Nice find, by the way! The classic "Hot Rod" set :)

I pointed out above, thought it was "John Milner."

JM is John Milner the same way JB is Jeff Beck: it *is* indeed what they stand for, and everyone knows it...but Duncan can't say so officially. Hence JB officially meaning Jazz Blues and JM officially meaning Jazz Model.
