Re: HELP! Lost in planning a DIY Fuzz Face

Hehe, I just checked a pack of 10 AC128's over at Ebay.de. I might bid those in, we'll see... or then get a hold of a matched set of two.

Have any idea where I could get two sockets from within Europe, Niels?

Anything else that you come to think of that might might cause the problem...except funny transistors? :D

Re: HELP! Lost in planning a DIY Fuzz Face

So I tried to switch them around... the result:

It's more articulate, single notes come through more... less fizzy. All in all better sounding! So that's very nice :D

But the problems I described above are still there. Wierd Buzzing when guitar vol is turned to down in the 0-3 range, and also wierd buzz when the fuzz pot is turned all the way up!

And the buzz is less audible when using a used Duracell 9v than when using a new Greencell Zinc-Chloride 9v.

What should I do? ... I'm lost

Re: HELP! Lost in planning a DIY Fuzz Face

The way you say "buzz buzz buzz" it could be that the circuit is oscillating - what's called motorboating.

First check the value of your resistors, then check to make sure you have the polarized caps wired in the correct way.

If there is no problem there, it is most likely the way the circuit is layed out. All high gain circuits can oscillate.

One thing that will stop it is to bridge across the battery supply with an electrolytic cap. I'd start with a 47mfd and go higher if required.

If you are still using that layout diagram you previously posted, connect the cap at the junction of the 33K and 470 ohm resistor (negative side) and the positive side to a ground - like something connected to lug 1 of the FUZZ pot.

Re: HELP! Lost in planning a DIY Fuzz Face

Small bear electronics sells matched transistor sets for the common configurations (NPN Fuzz Face, PNP Fuzz Face, Tone Benders, etc.). I don't know if they ship to Europe, but it seems that for simple circuits like the FF the transistor is very important. (Remember the stories of Jimi trying entire boxes at Manny's to find the few gems, I'm sure it wasn't because of resistor and cap tolerances ;)) Also, by socketing the transistors you can avoid damage by soldering as well as change them at will to find your perfect set. Another thing about ebay transistors, you know the guy selling them took the good ones out and is selling the rest... For me it's worth the couple of bucks to buy the matched pair selected for your application, especially if you can't measure leakage and gain.

Sorry I can't help diagnose the issue, I'm a newbie too. This is fun stuff, isn't it? :D

Re: HELP! Lost in planning a DIY Fuzz Face

LJ King, motorboating that is exactly what is sounds like!! :D

I'm still using the layout diagram I posted so I'll try your suggestions as soon as I got the parts and time for it. I'll report back :D

PFDarkside... it sure is fun stuff! :D I've looked at Small bear electronics page before and saw their matched set. I might actually order those even though I have to deal with the overseas importing trouble then. But it might be worth it ;)

Have to see how LJ Kings suggestion works out first and see how it ends up sounding without the motorboat in there :D
