Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

Hey all,

I own a mesa rectoverb half-stack, but I left it with my parents in Washington, since it would have been overkill for my small apartment in Ohio. For the past three years I've used modelling software or my podxt through my studio monitors as my only means of amplification. That's been fine up until now -- I recently jammed with a drummer and a bass player and we want to practice a couple times a week and play some at some of the local bars. For the initial jam, I actually borrowed an amp from a friend of mine -- one of those new peavey vyper modellers with a tube power section. The vyper (i think it was the 60watt tube version) actually sounded fairly nice on the fender twin setting, but I'd like to explore some options before throwing down the cash.

I can't really afford to spend more than $350-400, maybe a little more if it's something special and a good deal. Lately I've been using fairly clean tones -- typically I que up an ac30 or fender model with a nice fat reverb and use the neck pickup of my strat. I want something with nice deep lows and shimmering highs. I'm not a fan of the "jangly" fender sounds, and I want something that breaks up nicely when I dig into the strings, with just enough gain to do a throaty rock tone if I slam the front end. Lately I've been playing lots of post-rock music with big warm textures, so it's important to me that the tone isn't sterile or cold sounding.

Options I've looked at so far include:
Yamaha THR10 (looks awesome but probably not loud enough)
Peavey Windsor studio 112 (used for 200)
Fender Super Champ x2 (300)
Fender Pawn Shop special Excelsior 1x15 (300)
VHT special 6 (379) (too small?)

Some craigslist listings:
1968 Fender bassman (450)
1979 Fender champ (400)
Fender deluxe 112 plus (200) -- solid state I believe
Fender Blues Deluxe (425)
Fender blues deville (600) -- also a bit out of my league
Fender vintage bassman 4x10 (395) -- some minor damage
Peavey Ultratube 4x8 combo (350)
Traynor bloc 100gt (250) -- this listing is a package deal and comes with a godin guitar
Mesa/boogie subway rocket (550) -- a bit high for me right now...
Roland JC120 (375) -- too clean?
Polytone mini brute iv (375) -- too clean?
Randall rh100 half stack (250)
Peavey Valveking 212 (275)
'75 Kustom Lead II (125)
Kustom HV100 combo (325) -- seems really decent for the price

So... is there an obvious choice here? What would you do in my shoes?

Sorry for the really long post, by the way :)

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

Fender HRD, Peavey Classic 30 or 50, Peavey Delta Blues or a Crate Vintage Club 30 or 50 should all be in your price range and would seem to fit your needs.

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

What about a Laney Cub 12? I don't know how much they go for in your part of the world, but they've had some good reviews. I've never tried one, but I'd like to hear from someone who has.

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

That Blues Deluxe would be my choice. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe and while it doesn't blow me away, it's a solid gigging amp. The Blues Deluxe and HRD are basically the same amp. The blues deluxe skips the More Drive setting, and I believe it has an upgraded speaker.

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

that 1968 Bassman head is the best amp you listed

I bought mine when I was 15...I will never sell it.

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

Hot rod deluxe with a speaker upgrde. Tonespotter, can rex, swamp thang...

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

There seems to be a general consensus on the hot rod deluxe -- I listened to some youtube clips of it and the blues deluxe and I think it's a bit brighter/crunchier. I kind of prefer the darker sound of the HRD, and I like that it has the extra gain channel -- seems like it has a flabby bottom, but that's not a big deal since I don't really need it to "chug." The laney looks cool, but a bit thin sounding in the clips I listened to. Some people say the HRD has reliability issues though -- thoughts? There's a used one on ebay listed for 400...

Empty Pockets -- doesn't a bassman typically have to be cranked before it breaks up?

I'm actually leaning toward the windsor studio -- I could get it for like 250 shipped and swap the stock tube for a 6l6 to give it more headroom. It seems like a helluva bargain, though the HRD definitely sounds less flat to my ears.

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

Find out (you need SEVERAL gut shots) what condition that Bassman is in.

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

How about a VOX 150-watt 2x12. It has a ton of presets, effects, and amp models. It has a tube-driven valve reactor and a 12ax7 vacuum tube. It is $549 new, but you could get a factory restock from Guitar Center for $439.

Re: Help me choose a dirt cheap giggable combo

No contest for that $ Jet City JCA22.
I have the head and use it on a Blackstar 1/12. My whole rig cost me just $450. This little thing RIPS and it many times will get played out rather than my other high $$ rigs because of the tones.

This is what I have bought my head used new you are looking at $550 for both or they do have a combo version of the JCA22.
Small lightweight well built and great sounding what's not to love??

In that price range I'd look at a used Vox AC15 or Peavey Classic 30.

Did you even read the OP? How is a Jet City a clean on the verge of breakup amp?

OP: As the owner of a 68 Bassman, I say GO FORTH and get it. $450 is a pretty good price too. Honestly, this is an incredible amp, and not just for the price. I've never found an amp that I like better. If you need a bit more grind out of it at manageable volumes, I'd go for a Zvex Distortron or something similarly 60's Marshall-esque.

Yes I read the post and the Crunch channel on my jet City with the master up and the pre gain down does this very very well. Better in fact than any other amp that has been mentioned in this thread. This in fact is the very reason I OWN one of these amps in how versatile they are! I normally however on stage will run my Crunch gain at around 4 or so. With my PRS Custom 24 and the 5 way rotary using the volume on the guitar only I can go from really nice chimy clean to clean with some hair to scream with out ever touching the channel switch or using any effects.
Here is a clip from Church doing just this. https://www.box.com/s/6400bf0494e6da051ca8
I take it you have never played one of these amps??
