Here she is. A solid mahogany body Les Paul Classic. Rosewood fretboard. Mahogany neck. 57 Classic neck/57 Classic+ bridge. I want Duncan pickups only.
What music do I play? It doesn't matter. What I want this guitar to sound like is...

A Les Paul :usa2:

What do you suggest???

Mmmmmm....thats one sweet lookin' axe! If it were mine I'd put a Duncan Distortion in the bridge and.......probably leave the neck position alone. That works for me.....

Oh man yeah. I didn't want to say it, but I have Distortions in my Epiphone Les Paul and it sounds like money. They're my favorite.
Thank you for your suggestion Metlking.

Re: Help me choose pups for this Gibson of the Week.

By the way, the Tone Wizard suggests SH-5 Custom bridge & SH-1 59 neck.

A good suggestion IMHO except the "59" could be a bit muddy with the mahogany and rosewood board. Maybe a Pearly Gates or Jazz neck would be more suited to this particular guitar. How does it sound now on the darkness versus brightness scale??

Also, does it have 300K or 500K pots?? If it's on the dark or muddy side of things and has 300K pots you might want to upgrade to 500K to bring out some brightness and clarity.

To be quite honest, it sounds great. I haven't had the cover off the back yet. But from the suggestions so far, I have a Distortion bridge and a Jazz neck on hand. I'm just not a fan of bright guitars. But I have as much fun modifying guitars as I do playing them.
Thanks Wymore. I've been checking out your website. I need some electronics to upgrade my daughter's Epiphone Les Paul Ultra. I'll be placing an order soon. Do you have any shielded wire? I didn't see any.

Re: Help me choose pups for this Gibson of the Week.

I recently purchased a 1999 Classic, which is a bit different. No weight relief holes, flamed maple top. But i think these 57 Classic are really good: a rather clear neck and medium beef bridge. So i dont see a urge to change them, but i would cover the pups or - if you want to buy duncans - look for covers / zebra and all cream coils.

Re: Help me choose pups for this Gibson of the Week.

I'd get Pearly Gates for the neck, and a Custom series bucker for bridge.

Re: Help me choose pups for this Gibson of the Week.

I have one of the Gibson Guitar of the Week guitars. Mine is the Week Two Classic Antique Fireburst (CAF) with the shaded black-to-red-to-yellow burst.

I could probably do a Seth, Antiquity or Pearly Gates set; but honestly--I think you're nuts for even THINKING about swapping pickups in that guitar!

The key here is, "To be honest, it sounds great."

DUH!

I know this is a Duncan Board and I love Seths and Antiquitys as much as the next guy; and I know it's FUN to do some swapping....BUT....

Seriously, my Fireburst is a GREAT sounding guitar. I have six Les Pauls at the moment, and while I love them all--this one is really something special. Mine has great acoustical resonance, and some of the best workmanship I've seen on any Gibson during the 40+ years I've been playing. Right out of the box, it sounded killer.

You're going to want a set of potted pickups in that guitar, with the chambered body--and the '57 Classic and Classic Plus are potted. Seths, Antiquitys, Burstbuckers, and Classic '57s are merely variations on a theme--these are all good sounding pickups. I think Gibson has done really well in matching these guitars with the '57 Classic and Classic Plus.

When I got mine, I was going to to do the same as you--rip out the pickups, upgrade the electronics with new caps and pots, blah, blah, woof, woof. But the more I played it, the more I realized that doing all that would be a waste of time and money. Yeah, and I'm the guy with the 50th Anniversary A2 Seths in my 1997 Classic Premium Plus, Antiquitys in my 1996 Classic Premium Plus; and regular Seths in my 2005 Root Beer Supreme. And those guitars have RS Kits and LW Gotoh tailpieces, too! I just bought another Supreme, and I CAN'T WAIT to yank those 490R/498Ts out of that guitar!

But the CAF? Nah, that one is staying stock. It simply sounds too good to mess with. No new pickups; no RS Kit; no Gotoh tailpiece; not even super-duper Hovland caps.

I've gigged with it now four times and had it to a couple of jam sessions. I think this is a guitar that actually feels like it's MORE than the sum of its parts. It really seems to gig well, like a race-horse that doesn't do well in training, but just wins races. I like the light weight; though I've never minded a Les Paul under 9.5 lbs. All of mine are less than 9.1 lbs; whle the CAF barely hits 7.8 lbs. The neck is fast--it only needed a slight nut touch-up for superb playability.

Your all-mahogany GOTW Classic Antique will probably generate as much (if not more) interest from other players at gigs and jam sessions as my CAF. The CAF is a stunning finish, to be sure; but I have gotten some really nice compliments on my tone with this guitar. The '57 Classic and Classic Plus may not have the "cachet" of aftermarket pickups, but I think they are the perfect pickups for these guitars.

Good luck with your decision. It is a beautiful guitar.

Me, I'm not gonna mess with the mojo!

If we are changing just to change (aren't we always...) I say:
#1 PG set
#2 Seths

Re: Help me choose pups for this Gibson of the Week.

I'd get Pearly Gates for the neck, and a Custom series bucker for bridge.

+1.

Since the guitar is solid mahogany I would follow these steps,

Dump the 300K pots and install 500k's.

Get a Custom 5 (due to the body not having a maple cap) and a PG in the neck.

Be done with it!

Re: Help me choose pups for this Gibson of the Week.

A few years ago Gibson put out a triple humbucher version of that same guitar loaded with Seymour Duncan Distortion pickups, so that me be an idea.

Funny. It was the same time that they were putting Dimarzio Superdistortions in their Ace Freheley guitars

Re: Help me choose pups for this Gibson of the Week.

A pair of Pearly Gates would be perfect in that guitar for pretty much any style of music.
