Help me decide on amp?

Hi All,

So I am looking for a 1X12 tube combo. When I mention the two that I have narrowed down you can figure out my price range as I believe they are pretty much the same in terms of $$$.....Well at least both are well under $1000....

Peavey Classic 30

vs

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III

I would be looking to buy new......

I am into cleans....blues...rock...heavy rock....but not death metal or the like.....

Where I live there is no dealer near me that stocks both Fender and Peavey....Would have to drive a bit for a dealer stocking Peavey.....

I realize there is no substitute for trying them out for yourself......Just would like some input please.....

What say my fellow SD forum guys re: these two amps?

Thanks in advance.

Help me decide on amp?

I've owned both

I had a HRD and really liked it. I used pedals for hard rock. Loved the cleans and how m pedals we so useful in the sound. Peavey was nice as well. Cleans were great but OD to me still needed an OD for what I was wanting. Both were nice amps. HRD of course had more headroom and is louder.

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Peavey 30...better sounding "drive". When you're going to shell out $650 to $700, you really should take the additional time to go and 'test drive' both (and with your own preferred guitar). After all, internet opinions are just that and YMMV.

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Thanks for the replies guys....Appreciate it....I will be going to the store to try out the C30...Will call them first to see if I can bring my guitar and some pedals to try out...

Correct me if I am wrong......

The HRD has a presence control...

The C30 does not?

Did that make the C30 somewhat lacking? Also the c30 is not too bright is it?

Re: Help me decide on amp?

I haven't heard the HRD III but the drive channel on the older models wasn't too good. I'd go for the Peavey because I know it has a good overdrive channel. Try both - and you shouldn't have to ask if you can bring in your own guitar and pedals.

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Gotta love this place. Someone asks a simple A or B question and before long, there are suggestions of C and beyond...

Like most have said, the best option is to try them both out if at all possible. Hopefully you can find a dealer close enough. Are you in Ontario, by chance?

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Jay 77, good point, haha...is it time for the "just play a JB pup through whatever" suggestion?

Back on topic, I have owned and played both. The Fender does do a decent Fender clean, and if that is what you're into, go Fender. I'm not talking how it takes pedals, just the basic clean. Myself, I think the PV C30 is way better. A great clean sound, and the crunch blows the Fender away. I think that both take pedals decently.

My Option "C" is cheaper, has more tone and it's way versatiler.
I think is the OP who has to valuate if my comment has some interest to him. NOT YOU, I am sorry. Mind your business, mate.
To the OP, considere trying it, together with the other two, if it makes any sense to you.

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Option A for me. Its an easy choice IMO. I have owned both and the Classic 30 is a special amp on so many levels for rock and blues. Chewy, Articulate OD tones. The HRDs are a bit generic to my ears even though I play Fender amps primarily right now. HRDs come up for sale on Austin CL often, but seldom the Peaveys. There are few amps for the cash equal for a 30 watt 1-12 gem. Have fun!

Much Respect,

Rodney Gene

Yes, but your option C wasn't asked for. The OP asked re: those two specific amps. Don't get all pissy man.

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Thanks again to all for the suggestions......I think I am gonna spend some gas and try out the C30 first....

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Being a huge Fender amp fan I can only suggest that you get the Classic 30.

Sorry, just never liked the HRD.

Re: Help me decide on amp?

Those are two of the worst amp to work on, but they sure do sound "good". I guess I would just look for the "best" deal you can find on either one.
Whenever I see a guy is in Canada, I always ask:
"Can you get your hands on a Traynor".?
good luck
