Help Me find a $500-700 Dual Humbucker Guitar

OK I have tried the VM Les Paul, found it in worn red for $649 and free shipping. Good price and a nice guitar, but it was too dark for my tastes; probably the all-mahogany body although I did like the satin finish. I also do not like the boomy low-end I hear from a Lester.

I have tried several PRS SE models and like the Custom SE stoptail and the Semi-hollow custom. I have a very nice semi-hollow, 97 Washburn HB35 with Custom Manlius pickups and that really does it for a semi for me. So the Custom SE and the Singlecut (did not like it as well as the Custom, may have been the several guitars I tried as I found several Customs that were not so nice.

I also have been thinking of an Agile AL3000MAP, AL3500 (both out of stock in HSB and CSB at this time), Michael Kelly Custom, Reverend Roundhouse HB-FM and perhaps a used Edwards LP (new Edwards have really gone up in price due to the falling dollar and rising Gas Prices.

Another guitar I am intrigued by is the Godin LG, maple flame or quilt top, Duncan Jazz and Custom 5 pickups and it comes in a version with a 25.5" and another has the 24.75" scale. I usually play a 25.5 scale and find the snap and clarity of that scale to be interesting and nice. The 24.75 " does have more balls and better lower mids. This guitar is not a set-neck, but the deep-set bolt-on design makes it very lively, resonant & the sustain is fantastic.

I have played the Agiles, the Godin in several iterations, played a VM Lester and a used Edwards too. I have not had a chance to play the Michael Kelly Patriot Custom, Tradition S2000 or S2003 or a Hagstrom Super Swede/Swede or even the Reverend.

I used to have a Singlecut PRS, an 89 Les Paul Standard and recently sold a great Heritage H150CM and the Les Paul to finance a move to Texas so my wife can be close to her mom. My wife has metastasized breast cancer so I was happy to sell these guitars. The Heritage was by far the best guitar, it was a cutting guitar with the boomy overhang low-end of many Les Paul designs and it had been Plekk'd so it played like a dream.

Those of you who have played these guitars or have been on a similar quest please join in the discussion. My budget does not allow a LP Standard or Heritage and surely not a PRS SC at this time.

Have you tried an SG? If you don't like how dark and boomy the Les Paul was you're likely to enjoy the sound of an SG.

I have owned several Guild SGs (S-100s???) and have played a few Gibson SGs and they are not comfortable for me to play. I have this same issue with Specials and JRs. Flat top, lack of neck angle that you get in a carved top. This same issue has caused me to fear the Reverend Roundhouse too. I did not have any issues with the PRS SE Custom???

I just picked up a Explorer from a forum buddy that was in that price range. It looks like there are a few on eBay now.

The Washburn Idol series are great guitars. You can find the Pilsen model used in that price range.

Check out Schecter they have some great guitars in that price range. Also LTD and Ibanez are worth a look.

Schecter is the answer I believe. The C-1 Classic, the C-1 Blackjack or the S-1 Blackjack would be great choices. They come stock with JB/59 p´ups and are very well made. The classic has a maple top and lots of frills if that is your thing. As you have already mentioned, the SE line from PRS is very good - although I do not care for the pickups. If you can, try to find a dealer who has several of the ones you are interested in in stock and pick the best of the litter. The SE singlecut with different pickups can be a killer guitar.

+1. I have the C-1 Classic as well as a C-1 Plus (which I upgraded from the stock Duncan Designed for EMG 81/85). Both are great guitars.

+1 to godin and schecter if you want to pick up something new. if you are looking at 2nd hand then that opens up a lot of doors. if you are willing to pay just a little more then you can pick up a used hamer studio which will blow anything else out of the water.

I got my '81 Hamer Special for $400. Look hard, man. I've found a couple of old Sunbursts for around $600.

Re: Help Me find a $500-700 Dual Humbucker Guitar

New Edwards are now way over my budget and they are pushing on LP Studio prices. I will keep looking at the used Edwards.

700 dollars is at the upper upper end of my budget.

Has anybody seen and payed a Studio Faded CSB?

Dean has several nice options in that range as well including the Hardtail, Vendetta, Caddy, & even Solteros.

Re: Help Me find a $500-700 Dual Humbucker Guitar

I have had a lot of play time with Michael Kelly guitars ---

Their necks and bodies are always very top notch fit and finish, very impressive.

I love their electronics and tonal options, they have two push pulls to split the humbuckers, and their stock pickups are really sweet sounding.

The weight and balance were great as well --- I didn't notice anything about it, so that's good.

Tuning stability is huge for me and all of the 4 or 5 I test drove were stable as a table.

I really like them --- the only reason I didn't get one is because I think they're ugly (no pickup rings, ugly knobs, ugly pickups, flashy abalone binding everywhere)

I ended up with the least flashy guitar in the universe (Dot Studio, matte brown stain, matte black "binding," doesn't even have fret markers ) so the above qualms are purely a matter of aesthetic taste.

If you don't think they're ugly, then go for it!

The Custom you mentioned is by far the least ugly of the bunch!

Cliffs: Great Value!

If the LP was too dark...why not a Strat with 2 buckers? It would be brighter and have the 25 1/2" scale...it would also be easily modified to fit your needs.
You could also have a single in the middle position and wire with a superswitch to get both buckers together in the middle position.

It would be a very versatile guitar. :)

+1. You could always buy a MIM strat for $400 and then upgrade with a couple of humbuckers, + $150. You always have the option for the middle pickup.

Re: Help Me find a $500-700 Dual Humbucker Guitar

Hohner [2nd choice]
Dean Hartail SElect [3rd choice]
Fender American HSS [5th choice]
Les Paul Studio [1st choice]
PRS SE [4th choice]

I will let you know when I think of more!
