These are nice, and just right on the price...they'll have more brightness than the VM and Ibanez is famous for good quality. Check it out here

I assume you're looking at used guitars if you want to get the most bang for your buck. You can get a set neck Epi for $250 to $350, in excellent condition. That leaves plenty of money left over to upgrade PU's.

I've done Epi SG's for a total cost (used guitar & used PU's) for under $300. LP's & 335's for $50 to $100 more. If a LP is too dark for you with HB's, try it with a Phat Cat or two.

For $700, I could get two nice mid-price imports with Duncans or DiMarzios, that sound just about as good as Gibsons. If you don't do your own work already, you really need to start. I'll be glad to help you.

I have had a lot of play time with Michael Kelly guitars ---

Their necks and bodies are always very top notch fit and finish, very impressive.

I love their electronics and tonal options, they have two push pulls to split the humbuckers, and their stock pickups are really sweet sounding.

The weight and balance were great as well --- I didn't notice anything about it, so that's good.

Tuning stability is huge for me and all of the 4 or 5 I test drove were stable as a table.

I really like them --- the only reason I didn't get one is because I think they're ugly (no pickup rings, ugly knobs, ugly pickups, flashy abalone binding everywhere)

I ended up with the least flashy guitar in the universe (Dot Studio, matte brown stain, matte black "binding," doesn't even have fret markers ) so the above qualms are purely a matter of aesthetic taste.

If you don't think they're ugly, then go for it!

The Custom you mentioned is by far the least ugly of the bunch!

Cliffs: Great Value!

YES! Michael Kelly's are a great bang for the buck! I have played 2 and both were outstanding. Look at PRS SE's also.

Leaning towards used if I can find the one. Godin LG with a maple top in a Sig (25.5) or HB 24.75 scale. PRS SE is in the running too; great necks. A friend may have a Michael Kelly with less bling, NOS that will need new pickups. I can install new pickups and did so when I put Manlius Custom PAF (Mismatched coils) in my Washburn HB35.

The Michael Kelly pickups sound fairly good. Far better than most factory pickups. Same for the PRS SE buckers. Just a FYI.
