Help me find a practice amp w/reverb

I`m looking to spend from $100-$200 and I`m don`t think there`s a tube amp in that range so solid SS is cool , plus i`d like reverb . I`m looking for a nice clean sound , I`ll use a pedal for distortion . I`ve been reading up on the Vox Pathfinder 15R and its got some good reviews at HC .

Re: Help me find a practice amp w/reverb

I had a Marshall MG15 with built in effects and distortion a few years ago and I was sort of impressed with the sound for such a cheap and small amp. It was a hell of alot better than a Gorilla.

You might want to look into a Randall combo. They go pretty cheap 2nd hand and have good cleans and reverb for SS amps.
If I were you I'd save up some more and get a Fender Blues Jr. or something like that.

I actually toyed with the idea of grabbing one of those 15 watt ss Vox's. They sounded pretty darn good when i played one a while back. I just needed something to leave down at the beach house. But, for only 50 bucks more, you can often find a used Ampeg J-12T Jet reissue. 2xEl84, 2x12AX7, single 12" Eminence speaker, Trem and Reverb. They are absolutely awesome little amps. 15-20 watts, kind of a vox meets marshall tone. Plenty loud.

I have one and my son has it in his room. I told him the other day I was trying to sell it and he just about begged me not to. I was going to give him my Tweed Deluxe but he likes the EL84 tone better.

My 2 cents

I am using the Vox pathfinder 15R its my favourite amp and has never let me down, now im being honest it works very well, When miked and the cleans on it are really nice and warm and jangly, the overdrive chanel is more solidstate sounding than tube sounding depending on your guitar but can be very smooth with the right gat. It beats the tone of 2 other tube amps I use and a solidstate one (all above 50w) And all you need to do is click in a pedal for distortion or overdrive and youve got a nice setup. So many people comment on how nice it sounds and how they cant believe all that sound is coming from a little 15w amp. it has tremelo and reverb aswel, but bewarned it is not a metalers amp it is more vintage sounding like classic vox, ul need a pedal for massive amounts of gain. I highly recommend it

By the way those harmony central reviews are true, theyre actually being honest for once, not like some people who blabble on and onand say how good it is when it isnt.

I like the tone of the Ampeg amps. Really good stuff. Made in the US, St. Louis Music (they make Crate as well).

Drawbacks are what appear to be rather inexpensive circuit boards and the tube sockets are mounted directly to the circuit boards. But, for 200 bucks, geez! Tube tone to the max, price to the min.

I'm so going to have to buy this damn thing. I so don't need it.

Roland Microcube I heard is good for the price.

Used red knob Fender Champ 12. (E-bay)

Re: Help me find a practice amp w/reverb

I paid around 200 for a Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue 30w and reverb. It's solid state, has 2 Channels, pretty solid cleans, nice gain channel, but not a whole helluva lot of headroom, but what do you expect? It's got a Jensen Blue 10"

They also make a 15w, which in my opinion sounded better than the Pathfinder. A friend of mine has a Pathfinder with Tremolo, which is totally cool.

I should say that, the Vox is a pretty solid little practice amp for the money

Re: Help me find a practice amp w/reverb

If you like the Vox, the 15R isn't a bad way to go. If you can find one, the Cambridge 30 (now discontinued) is also fairly cool. It's got a tube preamp into solid state, and is surprisingly warm and bright. Also cool in the Vox line are the new Valvetronix 15 and 30 watt combos. Both offer amp modeling & effects, and both offer the tube preamp. I've not played around with these yet, but have fooled around with their bigger brothers and had to be dragged away.

The Roland Microcube is a neat little modeling amp, as well. It's solid state, offers reverb or delay, has several on-board effects, and not-half-bad amp simulatins. It's small, fairly rugged, and runs both on an outlet or AA batteries. That mighty two-watt powerhouse ain't half bad as a practice amp, and the portability is nice.

All of the above have decent clean tones that get dirty when you want them to.
