Help me pick my third guitar

Hi guys

I wanted to pick your brains for a third guitar :)

My first one is a fender strat plus with lace sensors.

The second is a Epiphone inspired by 1955 limited edition Les Paul with (Gibson) p90's.

I think the third one should should be something with humbuckers to "complete the spectrum".

A Les Paul would be the obvious choice, but I just wanted to pick your brains to see what you would choose as the third one.

I mainly play grunge, rock and some indie (think smashing pumpkins, audioslave, mute math, the strokes, ...)

Guitars I've considered so far:
- epi gothic (cheap and love the matte finish)
- epi Lee Malia
- epi dot or 339
- fender Chris shifflet tele
- squier active jazzmaster
- squier contemporary strat or tele
- Jim root tele (looks badass)

What would your third pick be? :)

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Dots can be some really sweet guitars. I had a Dot Deluxe for a brief period of time, way, way more guitar than you'd reasonably expect for what I paid ($225 or something?)

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

No doubt a 335 adds a lot to your Strat/LP game.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

I'd second the semihollow.
You already have a solid body LP - albeit with p90's, so the humbuckers with a semi will give a slightly different take.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

^ If it had standard sort of Tele singlecoils I'd agree......but he seems to be looking in the humbucker direction.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Out of the options that you listed, I would say do the Lee Malia or the 335.

A couple additional ideas are in the realm of LTD’s for what your wanting. Try an EC 256, I was very happy when I got one, or a used 1000. Obviously most modern guitars can do a lot more then what they used to be able to.

One that I never see on the forums are Hagstroms. I got a Hagstrom, a new one not the original ones. I love it, it is very heavy and has a very good PAF style sound. The tone toggle is good, you can make it into a Jazz machine or a rock machine instantly.

G&L HH Tele...many options...all good choices....

My dad bought a Tribute carved-top ASAT Deluxe - great guitar. I'd go Superhawk:

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

I am not someone who thinks you should get something you don't have just so you have different styles of guitar. I say, buy what inspires you to play it all day. If it were me, I'd go for an acoustic.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Get a new Epiphone flying V, or an old Gibson Gothic V or SG, both should be under $1k on reverb

A Tele needs at least a bridge single coil to make real Tele sounds, the tele vibe to me isn't humbuckers. A semi-hollow body should be a part of everyones collection, but grunge means you'll be going possibly higher gain than what those guitars were intended for.

So,....get a V, then a 335 ( older Washburns are really nice AND cheap), then a Tele for Dwight Yoakam covers.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

I like the idea of a tele

I like the idea of a semi hollow

i like the Idea of an acoustic

get a Taylor T5z

cover all them basses

or get a bass

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Buy used, get a list of several things of interest so you can take advantage of whatever has the best price

Consider an Explorer or a superstrat

And definitely avoid buying anything new by Squier or Epiphone... especially the higher end models, that kinda money buys serious Japanese and even American gear on the used market

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Wow, some really great suggestions already!
I already have an acoustic (Eastman e8d).

The reason why I want a humbuckers guitar is because I feel it's missing in my arsenal and to complement the other two guitars nicely in the mix.

I'll try to take a picture of the plus strat later (somebody asked right?) :)

Also:
G&l are quite hard to find round here, not a lot of European dealers anymore it seems.

Had a hagstrom Viking in the past and was not overly enthusiastic about it.

The prs se is definitely a contender!
