Help me pick my third guitar

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

And definitely avoid buying anything new by Squier or Epiphone... especially the higher end models, that kinda money buys serious Japanese and even American gear on the used market

What?

I don't know about Squier, but the Epi. Hinds V I got last year will hang with or be nicer than most Gibson V's. I have both and the Epi. goes and the Gibson sits at home. Epi. used to be sub-par, NOT ANYMORE, especially their sig. stuff.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

I don't think I'm looking for a shred stick or Floyd rose Tremelo.

Look at it like this: with the fender strat plus and les Paul with p90's I've got the corgan side of things covered. Now I'm looking to complete it with the Iha side (he plays a Les Paul custom).

The Reverend corgan signature also sounded great when I saw them live in London last month but it's too expensive and almost not obtainable here.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Look up "lawsuit Les Paul" on the used market and you will find plenty of phenomenal Les Paul copies that often times out performed real Gibsons of the day.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

SGs are great except sometimes the neck dive is distracting/annoying.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

I think if you like Epi's the 339 would be a great choice. I have a 339 PRO with coil tapping. It's a great value guitar. And it looks great. You can put a Bigsby B3 on it with a towner down tension conversion on the tailpiece studs without drilling any holes. Then convert it back to stock anytime.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

this is a highly personal response -no need for you GNR savages to go ape ****. Personally I prefer a different humbucking tuneomatic setup over an LP -like an SG or Semi Hollow centerblock style

-I'm not a regular LP fan -they feel dark, chunky and gross in my hand versus a 335 style, SG or LP special profile. I've owned several, and always regretted it.

Before an LP style

I'd go either SG or center block hollow body like a 335 for Humbucking Tuneomatic platform -Check out a Guild Starfire or one of the Ibanez semis
or if you play with others who play humbuckers style -I'd go Tele style or a Tele Deluxe with bright Humbuckers
or get weirder and go Bigbsy -maybe something less ubiquitous like a Gretsch Duo Jet etc.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

I have a Florentine Epi LP

and I made my Ehdwuld signature the same way
and I have a Dean Shire with a peizo bridge

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

If you are gigging, then you MUST have a suitable backup for your Number One guitar...a Number One-A.

My Number One is a G&L Legacy (strat), but I also have 335s and Les Pauls. But I wouldn't want to do a four-hour gig with just a 335/LP. I'm wedded to that Legacy, so I have a backup for it that would get me comfortably through a gig if anything happened to my Number One.

When I gig, I use a 2HB for only 12-15 songs a night. Maybe a couple of banjo songs, maybe a couple on acoustic or 12-string, and the majority all on the Legacy.

If your Number One is the P90 guitar, then maybe think about a backup for it. But once you have a backup, then go for diversity.

I like the Legacy with a 2HB guitar as Number Two. These days I'm finding I prefer my 335s over my LPs.

Good luck!

Bill

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

I'm still pondering on this.

So I have now:
- fender strat plus
- Epiphone inspired 1959
- variax acoustic 700
- Eastman e8d

These go Into:
- Eleven rack with ground control pro
- Harley Benton gpa400 Poweramp
- Harley Benton g112 with V30

I want to sell the Eastman, though nobody seems to want to buy it :D

My shortlist so far:
- Fender player jazzmaster HH
- Reverend (don't know which model yet)
- Epiphone es or other semihollow
- squier contemporary jazzmaster active
- fender thinline 72
- Gibson sg

I'm not really gigging so a backup is not necessary.

The problem with Reverend is that they are almost unfindable where I live.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

(
SGs are great except sometimes the neck dive is distracting/annoying.
I have had 3 gibson SG's (2 faded specials and 1 standard) and 1 epi g400 (my ancient g310 will not be classed with the others)_ Never had a neck dive issue, but i used 3' leather straps with them..

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Just browsed the local classifieds for an sg. There are Soo many different models :/

Anyone have a link that lists the differences or the good from the bad? [emoji14]

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Epi g-400 cheap, but modable, with pickups/ electronics
Gibson sg special faded, damn good bang for the buck cheaper/est gibson sg
Gibson sg special gloss, same as above but glossy
Gibson sg standard: Just play it, its that good
Now, there are variables on every exaple listed above, just have to see what floats your boat as far as options/ $$ allows
I personally would stay away from the 70's special tribute, unless you like a huge headstock, and mini humbuckers (you could always swap to p90's however)
Others chime in with various models as well..

Damn, I need another sg..

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Maybe I got this wrong but for me I look at it like buying Art. If it inspires me then I take it home.

Re: Help me pick my third guitar

Just like to mention that I have a Variax Acoustic 700, too. Very fun guitar to play, and it is my main gigging 'acoustic'.
