Help me pick out a bridge pickup for my CC#24 R9

Re: Help me pick out a bridge pickup for my CC#24 R9

A '59n with an A4 and a stock Whole Lotta Humbucker in the bridge is a killer set. The WLH can best be described as a '59b with more mids, rolled off highs, and a more even bass response. It isn't too far away from the '59b in tone, but it fixes a bunch of the common complaints. An A4 in the '59n does the same thing.

Are you referring to the flabbiness in a A2 in a 59b?

Yes. Exactly.

After about a half hour or so with the unoriented A5, I have to say that's the magnet for this pickup in a Les Paul. It retains enough of the high end to give it some bite without being harsh, and the boomy bass isn't a problem either. If this wasn't the right match, I was just going to go back to stock and say that Seymour knows what he's doing just fine without my help. (For the record, Seymour knows what he's doing just fine without my help.)

UA5 is fabulous in a 59B. I think that might wind up being just the ticket for the OP too.

I really like the Antiquity PAFs in one of my Les Paul Classics. If I needed more from the bridge, I would probably try a Brobucker.

My other Classic got a set of the 50th Anniversary A2 Seth Lover sets from Musician's Friend from a few years back. These are slightly overwound, and I think much better than the stock Seths.

In my Historics, I've left the Burstbucker A2 1 and 2 sets. They have a clarity and a bit of an edge that's great for rock. The BB2 can twang like a Tele on steroids. If I know that I'm going to be playing more soft rock, for a more mixed or older crowd, then I'd probably opt for my Elegant with its Classic '57s. These are pretty warm, without the edge and the clarity of the BBs. Easier on the hearing aids...seriously.

The Anniverary Seths fit right in the middle...the best of both worlds...warmth, sustain and clarity.

I like them all, just different flavors. Some days at Baskin's and Robbins I want Peanut Butter and Chocolate, other days Rocky Road, or German Chocolate Cake ice cream.

I've not found in my 50+ years of playing, one guitar that can handle all the genres I play and give me all the tones I need. Nor do I think there is one perfect pickup.

Good luck!

Bill

Funny, I've found the exact opposite. With the right pedals and the right amp, any guitar can fulfill my needs. Page got his thick tone on Whole Lotta Love from a Tele with teeny tiny strings. I just like modding and different pickups because it's fun to mess around with them. It's also nice to have a guitar that works well with minimum effort from the rest of your rig.

I am the same way. I hate switching guitars, and I try find a guitar that works ergonomically for me to use for everything.

i have a variety of guitars but typically only play one per gig unless i break a string. i might bring a strat and a sg so they arent necessarily similar but only switch if something goes wrong with the one im playing. obviously itll sound a little different, but it still sounds like me no matter which guitar i play sadly

Re: Help me pick out a bridge pickup for my CC#24 R9

Well I made some changes. UOA5 was the ticket for the 59 model. Why wouldn't they've used this magnet to begin with? Bass is lowered some, tad more mids and highs are softened. With that said, I ended up putting back in the Antiquities in the CC and went all out OCD on the pickup height adjustment. Perfecto, the Ants sound ridiculously good in that guitar after spending some time adjusting. Amazing how the wrong adjustments with those pickups will make or break the tone. They're not weak like I originally stated, they are powerful, big, sweet and oh so clear. Neck pickup is right up there if not better than the Jazz neck and 59n. The 59's went into my Ebony Les Paul and seem to be a perfect fit. Well balanced.

Now I just need to get me a beat up LP Standard Goldtop and drop those Throbak MC-102B set in there and call it a day.
