Help me pick out a new guitar

Re: Help me pick out a new guitar

Thanks for all the links! Would a tremol-no make changing strings like a hard tail? Or would it still be the pain of a Floyd?

Maybe I'm just used to it, but I don't think changing strings on a Floyd is that much of a pain. Just clip the balls off (fortunately not like your dog), drop the ends in the saddle, and lock them down. I pull all the strings off at a time and lock them all in the saddles at once before running them through the tuners.

When I restring one of my Floyds I always unscrew the fine tuners all the way then turn them back in a couple turns. This way when you lock the nut down there's a tiny bit of wiggle room if the strings go sharp, which shouldn't be too much if you have the retainer bar on the headstock low enough.

The only kind of guitar I find to be a pain in the butt to restring is a classical, but that might be my own fault because of the way I like to tie the end of each string into the loop of the next thinnest string as I tie them into the bridge.

Re: Help me pick out a new guitar

I'll keep that in mind. It takes me forever and a half to change strings on a Floyd. But if the tremol-no makes it as simple as locking it down, and then just locking the strings in, I should be able to handle that without having to set the Floyd up after every string

Admittedly, that's one reason I don't like floating Floyds. Although, even with a floater, you shouldn't have to set it up every time you change strings as long as you're consistent with the brand and gauge of your strings (and the manufacturer is consistent). You just need to find a way to keep the bridge from falling into the body when you remove the springs. There's some specific tools that are made for that but I've used a plastic ruler under the bridge to hold it up.

As much as I like the Floyd Model, the whole Floyd idea is scary haha. I wish it was just as easy as a hard tail

Joe Satriani used to have a model where the bridge was basically an Edge trem on wrap over bridge studs. Totally hardtail but double locking.

Floyds aren't really that scary, though. I'm currently building ANOTHER Floyd loaded guitar for gigging. LOL

I'm just debating whether or not the Floyd is worth dealing with for the neck humbucker instead of a stacked single coil, and the maple neck instead of Rosewood

I almost always go non-recessed Floyd these days... LOL

Have you thought about going Warmoth? Get a top-routed Strat body with two buckers and hardtail?

I've considered it, but it would be super expensive when I account in the pickups, putting the parts together myself and everything else. I've seen some pieces from there cost almost 600 for a body..

The blue one here is kinda cool. That's $342. Get a neck for a couple hondos with a nut cut for it. Warmoth would have the hardtail bridge that fits.

I'm just throwing ideas out, just so you know. :)

Me, I'm in the process of building this. I've got a body and neck in the works and already have the hardware. It's not far off from the original idea of the thread, minus the neck humbucker and my taste in paint jobs. :p

Re: Help me pick out a new guitar

I'd have to get the pickup slots routed out wouldn't I? I can't do almost any work myself here.

I love the way that looks! Anything like that with a hard tail and Id be set haha

Warmoth would do all the routing for you. If you click on the body it gives you all the options on the right. It only seems to give an option for Strat controls (VTT/blade switch) but I'm sure if you call them they'd have no problem drilling however many holes you want (V/3-way-toggle?).

I ordered a Tele body from the Showcase and had them route it for a neck humbucker. The routing is free.

Then that might be a little more reasonable, how much do you think it would run all said done, electronics, hardware, the whole deal?

Re: Help me pick out a new guitar

At work and cant open all the links and read in great detail, but wanted to toss in that Charvel is making several models with out floyds. The one that was posted is Hum/single. they have hum/hum configurations that come IIRC both with and without pickguards. (if you are set against a floyd.) If you go for a floyd, get a tremol-no, block it or just do what I do and put a ruler (wrapped in a soft cloth) under the back of the trem when you change strings. And start restringing with the ball end of the string at the peg, so you only have to cut the string once, and it's less prone to slipping.

Gimme a little bit to figure that out. I've got a little bit of Java programming homework to do then I can put something together for ya.

Look around on Warmoth's site and see what you like wood-wise and color wise. Other than that you're looking for basically a San Dimas with a hardtail Strat bridge, right?

Essentially yes, a strat style body, hh routing, simple three way toggle, or switch I guess, fixed bridge, basically that charvel setup

Re: Help me pick out a new guitar

I think this Iron label Ibanez would fit the bill
loaded with EMGs
I love the color and binding

or this S771

or this RG421
I'm not a fan of the INF pickups but that is easily remedied

Ibanez necks are Love/Hate thing

I personally love mine

That iron label is pretty sweet looking, I would have to swap out the actives though, I've got the exact set in another guitar of mine. The problem with Ibanez is my local gc and other stores dont stock many, I literally just left the stores and the best Ibanez was a 400$ model, the neck and I didn't bond. But that doesn't mean the higher end ones won't feel better
