Help Me Understand the MXR Micro Amp

Re: Help Me Understand the MXR Micro Amp

Yeah. As I recall it was just to boost your level. I never tried one so I can't comment on how clean that boost is.
Didn't it also have an XLR out? That'd make it handy as a direct box to plug your acoustic electric into. And I seem to recall MXR touting the fact that it was a high Z buffered, active amplifier stage, which meant that if you used long cables, it minimized the losses in signal you got when just running a long cable to your amp. Of course a few years after it was introduced, wireless transmitters became the norm for players playing on large stages.

Re: Help Me Understand the MXR Micro Amp

It IS a clean boost... no XLR out, just 1/4" in & out.

I've got an old block logo here that's dead at the moment... I really need to fix it and there's no excuse 'cause I know what the problem is...

Last time I used it (couple years ago) I remember it having LOTS of output drive and wasn't terribly noisy considering the amount of gain I would add with it... pushing a Marshall or whatever well over the edge. I never found another use for it but I'm sure there are... it can also be set for small volume boosts, maybe in an FX loop.

I tried that MXR/CAE booster & drive a few weeks back, liked the boost a lot. Lots of clean gain, fairly quiet, didn't change the sound dramatically... the overdrive side was super lame. Not much good there.

Re: Help Me Understand the MXR Micro Amp

It's a clean-'ish' boost. The knob does say 'gain'. Nice for Strat as you get a nice vol bump with a small hint of grit. Move it around the pedal chain, makes a big diff. In my new band, we go loud using the amps natural gain, it almost seems useless, like the tubes are already pushing hard and the Micro can't do much more, even dimed. I asked a while back about putting it in the FX loop. It works well, BUT the boost is 'too clean'...for me...
I'm running 3 amps so my Legend being the 'dirty' amp may work for lead work with the Micro in front. I'll figure it out...one day.

Re: Help Me Understand the MXR Micro Amp

I only use mine in the loop as a clean boost and it works well giving me anything from nice and subtle up to a big solo boost. It's fairly neutral and doesn't seem to colour the sound.

Re: Help Me Understand the MXR Micro Amp

I bought one last month. Although I have yet to try it out on my TSL my understanding is that it will give a boost to a clean sound, act like an overdrive for a slightly dirty channel and it will simply add more gain on a gain channel with no noticible volume boost. Many people have said using it in the effects loop works.
