Help me with my Shred Congnitive Bias -is this the worst?

Re: Help me with my Shred Congnitive Bias -is this the worst?

Yeah I think PG is definitely on the short list of guys that would be a blast to hang out with. He has a goofy sense of humor and can totally geek out on tone toys! Oh yeah, he can play too if nobody has noticed.

Before those sessions, almost every metal session I was at was a terrible vibe, because it was the 90s and metal was out of style, many of the session I worked were clean up of old 80s tracks so whatever band could have new, or completed old material for a CD box set -which was the big money maker then for Labels with catalogs falling out of style.

After that session, I was pretty Jazzed about shred

Paul isn't just a shredder these days, he pulls out some good stuff from what I've seen. But, if he is called on to shred, not many can touch him fer sure.

Was kind of an interesting plot twist that our Clint likes the VV video (wat?), not sure what to make of that. I can't say that VV is not a bad player necessarily, he's definitely had more success that I have, but just not my cup o' tea.

He is one of the most dynamic and versatile guys in that category because he can do a lot more interesting stuff than a lot of one track minded guys are doing, which isn't a bad thing either cause that's just their style I guess and some guys just stick with what they do and have done.

Two things I love about Paul

He can pretty much play any style and play it convincingly.

After all these years he is still as enthusiastic about the guitar as ever.

How can you you not like him?

I just love power slop.

I've given up on ever reaching his level of ability, but I could use some of that enthusiasm!

I just love power slop.

But, VV is like the anti-Cobain!

I'm going to make a guess and say any Paul Gilbert vid is probably incredible from a technique, phrasing, tone, and especially humor,-In 1997, I worked a recording session he was at -that dude is %100 awesome -and at the time I knew nothing at all about him, because I wasn't into post 1980s shred or songs about getting on a girl next after your friends been with her.... :lmao: Been a fan ever since.

You know, as much as I admire the talent, musicianship, etc of the shred guys, I find it difficult to sit down a just listen to their solo music.
I much prefer to hear that style of guitar within he context of a vocal based song.
Probably one of the reasons I’m a big fan of Warren DiMartini.

Thats my dude -maybe the biggest impact on me from the Glam Metal Era.

His licks are so smooth

He’s in my top 3...for sure. I love his style.

He has this phrasing thing thats different from most that I recognized even before I played guitar when he was brand new -*****googles Warren Dimartini phrasing*****

You know, in all honesty, I pretty much dislike most guitar solos when there is no other accompanied music. Especially the shred stuff.

As in a single guitar playing something or as in an instrumental song?

Just a single guitar. There is no reference point, if that makes sense.

Yup, I get you.
Kinda like the beginning of this thread with the VV shred video.
He is just wailing away but there’s no context to put it in.

Re: Help me with my Shred Congnitive Bias -is this the worst?

I don't know about PG. His guitar skill is extraordinary. He picks fast but with crystal-clear articulation. But his music suxx ass with 99% of the time being stuck in blues scale. I'll put him in the same category as Michaelangelo Batio, exceptional skill but terrible composition. Sorry for PG fans.

I think in terms of vocabulary and style, you can't beat Steve Vai and Greg Howe.

Re: Help me with my Shred Congnitive Bias -is this the worst?

Eric Johnson & Steve Morse are my go-to's for guitar mastery with taste (not constantly spewing note diarrhea).

Vinny's very talented and knowledegable... his playing style however, comes across as twitchy, frentic and hack-y.

But that's just his style. Sure there's better - but he's a shredder regardless... and a good one at that.
