What is the major differneces between a 1 3/4" and a 1 11/16" nut width? IS the difference noticable and what other factors are there?

Yes, they are noticeable. I prefer 1-3/4", but it is a very wide space between strings.
Think of it this way -- you can tell the difference between a .009 and .010 guitar string, then you're definitely going to fell the difference in the extra 1/16".
