help me with wirings ,issue

hi
today , i changed the jack imput and the cable
but i have a strange issue
the guitar has 2 humbuckers pickups and 3 pots, 1) volume tone pot, 2) treble pot for the neck pickup and 3) pot for the bridge pickup

now neck pick up , first pot volume works and 3° pot for the tone
neck + bridge seletcion , 1° & 2° volume , 3° tone
bridge selection the volume is in the 2° pot and the tone is in the 3° pot

the guitar is an ESP kirk hammet first issue or second issue '94 ,without active pickup (no active pickups)
in the home page there is that there are 2 volume and 1 tone
but i had always 1 volume and 2 tones
can you help to fix it?

the first pod on the left is the volume , the second and the third the tone
before changing the cable

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

The way I read the wiring:

1st pot (left in your pics) - is neck volume (assuming that cable is from neck up)

2nd pot (middle in your pics) - is bridge volume (assuming that cable is from bridge pickup)

These two pots then go to the switch to select which you hear.

Output of switch goes to 3rd pot (right in your pics), which is your master tone control (bleeds treble to ground).

So, with switch, your active pots should be

Neck - pots 1 (vol) and 3 (master tone)

Middle - pots 1 (N vol), 2 (B vol) and 3 (master tone)

Bridge - pot 2 (B vol), and 3 (master tone)

hi
now the 3 knobs work exactly how you wrote
but is there a way to use the first pod only for the volume , the second for the neck tone and the third for the bridge tone?
i remember i had only the first knob (pod) to control the volume)
thanks

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

I believe that would be standard fender strat wiring only with a 3 way switch instead of a 5 way.

hi
but i remember to have only 1 volume knob ,and 2 tone knobs
do you think there is some mistake in my soldering?
how can i have 1 volume for the 2 pickups?
thanks

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

hi
i can hear some glitches when i gently touch with my finger the Locking Nuts , the String Retainer , tuning keys
what does it cause it?
a bad cable not shield or a bad soldering?

i 'm reading and whating the diagrams
thanks

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

If you are hearing a buzzing noise that stops when you touch a metal piece, it is a grounding issue.
You most likely have a solder joint that needs to be re-flowed.

hi
it's no buzzing noise , some glitch ,just like if you touch very gently the stings with the index finger without playing , just touching very gently the string with the finger you can hear a glitch
now i can hear if i touch other place of the guitar
i recorded and seems vinyl cracke or glitch , while i was recording i was gently touching the tunning keys and the looking nut
it happen even i touch the knobs
thanks

I don’t understand what you mean by “glitch”.

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

Off topic, but what model ESP is that? Those are some very old pots you have in there that's why I asked. Id swap those out while you're at it.

hi
sorry for my poor english I have recored and upload a mp3 files above called glitch.mp3 #9
thanks

Ok...so that noise happens with the volume knob off, I’m assuming?

Since it happens when you touch a metal part, I still think it’s a ground issue.

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

It’s a Kirk Hammett.
That's what I thought on account of the dual hum. The control cavity shape gave it away as an ESP model.

Edit: I didn't see that he stated what it was prior to me posting this. Maybe he edited it and added that. No matter...

Those pots are not very good and they're old so Id swap them. Theyr'e Matsumoku pots (M500K stamping) made in Japan and mostly seen on Japanese made guitars.

They are cool guitars. I’d love to have one.

hi
the noise does disapear with the volume is off (knob off) , it happens only if i turn on the volume
it 's a gound issue , it was the cable i have soldered , should i change with a better cable ?
can you give me some adivses?
thanks

hi
how can be sure they are matsumoku pots , are so bad?
swap with what?
thanks

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

I’d suggest you go back through the diagram again and be 100% sure you have all the connections made.
As you go through it be sure that your solder joints are good and your connections are solid.

That’s about all I can tell you.

hi
well i have not my guitar diagram , but i will check tomorrow very carefull all the connections ,and solder joints
but i have soldered only 1 cable , the gray one with the green cable
thanks

Re: help me with wirings ,issue

I'm not saying the Matsu pots are a bad design but they are old as hell and if it were me I'd swap them out with new ones and be done with it, although you may not have to in the end but that's just my advice because that way you know you're good for a long time coming.

CTS, DiMarzio, and Bourns are all good brand names, plus others I'm sure.
