Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

Zerberus

Baron Von Shred
Idea: 1 humbucker, 2 rails/ Lil Hums...5 way switch.... I want 1, 3, and 5 to be the pickups individually, 2 and 4 I want the middle split with the respective other pup split as well.

Possible? If yes, could you please post a diagram?

Thanks :beerchug:

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

I'll chew on it. If possible, I'll post a diagram in an hour or so. ;)

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

yes, it's possible but you need a superswitch.

you may need to switch your hot and ground to the red and white (i don't know which one goes where) but theoretically this diagram will work. good luck

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

Hmm, can it be done with a Megaswitch?? I don´t have access to a SUper, but Megas I can get.. ;)

But I´m really interested in what Artie can cook up, if....he and Kent are my wiring gurus :headbang:

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

I tried before and you cant do it with the normal switches... i can look at the Superswitch though

Unfortunately, skydogg and kommerz are correct.

(Not unfortunate that they're correct - unfortunate that you can't do it with a standard 5-way.) :laugh2:

I'm not sure if a Mega switch will do it, just because I've never had one of those in my hand. Depending on how big of a hurry you're in, by coincidence, I'm ordering one for myself next week. A Superswitch will definitely do it.

However, there are a couple of interesting things you can do with a standard 5-way. And, if you're a bit of a "tinkerer" and fabricator, which I believe you are, you can get what you want. If you can get one little micro-switch to activate when the 5-way is in the #3 position, you can get the functionality you asked about. I'm talking about a switch thats something like this:

Jameco micro-switch

That switch is less than an inch long. If you can make that switch activate, while the 5-way is in the #3 position, you can have your cake and eat it too. ;)

Let me know, and we'll go from there. I have a couple other little ideas, (one that I'm using right now on my own Strat), but I need to find the diagram. It gets you very close to that functionality, with no mods.

I'll find it shortly.

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

ok just tried it and I found no possibility to wire it up with a 4 Pole Superswitch.. because only the option to split either coil a, coil b or none of the mid takes two poles, the other two are used for the neck and bridge pups and you have to send the not selected coils to ground which would take another one or two poles... (didn't look at that yet)

of course you could always tap the same coil of the mid pup in either 2 or 4, but that would kill the hum cancelling effect in one of these...

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

Kommerz, I gotta disagree with you on that one buddy. :)

I've got the complete functionality that he's asking for with a standard 5-way, except for the need for one simple SPST switch. Using a Superswitch would be overkill. I'll post a diagram here in a few minutes. ;)

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

ok then I'm curious what you have ;)

Ok now I know how it'd work with that extra switch, but you cant do that with a normal 2 pole 5 way switch.. you'll need the 4 pole superswitch... at least I think...
no wait... yes it could go wuth a normal switch too... but then you'll need a dpst... omg my brain is wierd...

Ok, look at this diagram. Its the standard way to achieve split coils with a 5-way. This is, more or less, the same thing shown in the SD schematics:

The only "problem" with that, if you want to call it that, is that the middle pickup isn't split in the #2 and #4 positions. Which would be fine if the middle was a single coil.

So, to solve that, we add a micro-switch, like so:

Zerb02.png

Now here's the trick. That micro-switch is wired using the "common" and "normally-closed" (NC) contacts. Its mounted in such a way that its only pressed when in the #3 position. So, the middle pickup is in a "split" mode all the time, except when its selected by itself - #3. We don't care that its split in the #1 and #5 positions, because it isn't being used then.

So you get:

1. neck
2. neck (split) with middle (split)
3. middle
4. middle (split) with bridge (split)
5. bridge.

As you can see, you only need add that one additional contact with the superswitch. The logical thing to do is just ground the red/white wire of the middle in the #2 and #4 positions. I can make a diagram of that also, if needed. ;)

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

Crap... I just figured out you can use the same coil of the mid pup in either 2 or 4 because it's the only one that has to be rw/rp.... I'm dumb...

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

btw - skydogg's diagram shows the superswitch wiring perfectly. ;)

No need for mine.

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

Artie...
But this would work too I think... without the need for an extra switch... just one 4 pole superswitch... poles 2 & 4 could be merged though... but I'm not sure about the phasing with that...

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

Absolutely. Just to be clear, the "micro-switch" idea was meant as an alternative to buying a Superswitch, if wanted to "tinker" instead. The micro-switch is about $2. ;)

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

thank you artie. it's great to hear props from the "wire diagram master"

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

Hmm, some great Ideas in this thread.....But I think I´ll wait until Artie has his megaswitch and then order one myself if it works ;)

How close can I get? I´m thinking "Standad" H-S-H wiring, but then positions 2 and 4 wouldn´t be hum canceling....Hmmmm....

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

I'll probably be placing my order on Wed. or Thurs. I need to figure out what parts I need for one other project, but I'm working on a ship this whole week, so I'm not sure I'll have as much time to work it out as usual.

They're funny about that. When I'm on a ship, they actually want me to work on the ship . . . not guitars. :laugh2:

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

I'm trying to put a switch (on/on/on) on my humbucker so I can get every posicion on it. But I can't get the connections right

Re: Help, need a wiring diagram (Artie? Kent?)

I want the first on to be the north coil, 2 to be in series and 3 for the south. Got anything on this.
