Hi people!

need your advice on something.. which distortion pedal should i get if i play metal, punk (greenday, offspring) and rock (puddle of mudd). i know that metal zone would cover metal without a doubt but would it do for the other genres?
really spoilt for choice here.....

Re: Help needed:which pedal

hi there
assuming you dont want to sepnd huge amounts, one to look at would be the RAT series of pedals. I used to have a vintage RAT. It will do the styles you like, works great live or at home, and is built like a tank. I am sure you will get a thousand other suggestions though!

Re: Help needed:which pedal

Keeley-modded Metal Zone. It's the only pedal I've tried that actually sounds like a high-gain tube amp.

Re: Help needed:which pedal

whats the pros and cons of the metal zone vs the overdrive for the music types that i have mentioned? i am looking for a tight distortion which gives a punches for note picking as well as palm mutes...

It depends...

What kind of amp are you using?

Re: Help needed:which pedal

The rat sounds grainy to my ears. I have a jackhammer and I'm very happy with it. The trick is to not use the mid scoop, to turn the treble and the bass both to 2/10, then to shape your sound with a ten band EQ. I've never gotten more than nu-metal out of the metalzone, but I've never played one that was modded.

Re: Help needed:which pedal

I'm probably alone on this one, but I really dislike the Rat. I've played through 3 or 4 different ones, and they all clip really bad when I pick. The actual tone is ok, but the severe clipping is obviously a deal breaker.

at home i use a marshall solid state mg series amp.but at jamming sessions i use a 60 watt dunno-wats-the-name amp with a clear clean tone which doesnt have much of the marshall bite. i also happen to have a digitech rp200 multi effect which i'm using for chorus and stuff...

can the jackhammer handle punk as well as metal and hard rock? its EQ doesnt look as versatile as that on the metal zone.

Re: Help needed:which pedal

It always bugs me when people talk about tone for punkrock. Punkrock isn't supposed to be about sounding polished or great in the studio, it's always been about great songs and energy. Punk is extremely forgiving when it comes to the tone of the guitar.

As far as the jackhammer goes, I can do nirvana, jawbreaker, husker du, sonic youth, bikini kill, black flag, whatever you want. I don't repliate their tones exactly but it works great.

Re: Help needed:which pedal

One stomp-box that I have had good experience with is the BOSS DS-2 Turbo Distortion...
You can get an external switch for it and switch between distortion and turbo distortion. It is 100% excellent for grundge, and gets a good metal sound too. Your tone is also gonna come back to your guitar, your pick-ups and your amp, so keep all that in mind.
Rock On :burnout:
