Help noob on pickup re-wire on Yamaha HSS with coil split (tone knob push/pull)

I got a 1985 Yamaha SE612 from Guitar Center for cheap, only to find it has what I've been told is a wiring problem. The neck pickup (single coil) is very quiet compared to the bridge humbucker (far beyond the normal "humbuckers sound louder than single coil" effect). My music teacher opened the back panel and said he thought it was probably wired wrong. Though he might be wrong, I figure that this is a good time for me to learn more about how to remove, re-install and wire pickups which I've wanted to learn and never had an excuse. (Then I can dive into the glamorous world of customizing my guitars with different pickups in the quest for the perfect tone.)

At this point, I don't know if it's easier to just sort of take it all apart and re-wire it correctly, or try to diagnose the particular issue with the neck pick up wiring and fix it. In either case, I clearly need to understand how the wiring is supposed to be (a schematic or whatever). I'm hoping this is pretty standard for all HSS's with a coil split humbucker, as I expect it might be hard to find a specific schematic for the short-lived Yamaha SE series (though I guess Yamaha made Pacificas with the same configuration and controls, and that may be easier to find).

So, I guess the question is: Where do I find a schematic for an HSS set up with a push/pull tone knob that splits the humbucker, that would apply to my Yamaha? Do I need to find one that is brand specific? Do I need to know what kind of pickups I have?

Any advice appreciated.

Oh, I guess I can also use basic advice like a good soldering gun/soldering iron, solder, wire...I've read that some solder or wire for the wrong application is not good for guitar electronics. I can use Google to find what "kind" of solder or wire to get, but could use more practical advice like brands, where to buy, etc.

Yamaha used several different switches. Could you post a pic of the control cavity?
