Help!! Whammy V issue!

so I have my Whammy V in the shop right now and they are saying there is nothing wrong as this issue has come and gone away and come back and now seemingly gone away again. The issue is when bypassed the signal is quiet and when you turn it on the volume is doubled and blasts you away.

Is there an issue with the pedal or is some sort of black magic at work here ?

Help!! Whammy V issue!

What's the bypass circuitry like? Could be a bad transistor or relay in the switching circuit. Could also be a bad resistor making the volume double.

Sounds like a job for a meter and audio probe to help find the bad part.

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

Damn I'm not good with electronics I admit. I hope the guys at the shop can figure it out.

The pedal itself is true bypass.

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

If you cant figure it out, I'd suggest you send to a pedal repair shop. I know one, pm me if it comes to that

Could be as simple as a bad switch but I'm also suspecting a bad component in the input or output circuitry.

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

I'm thinking i'm goanna have to send it in to Digitech, the rep for Digitech Private messaged me on TGP to say that he would take care of it if my store would not repair or replace it. Fingers crossed my store does either of those!

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

Pedal repair? In a shop? Sounds like you risk paying triple the cost of buying another one... Imho, stick to garage-based electronics geniuses if you gotta pay for repairs on inexpensive gear. Shops charge what, around 75 an hour for labour?

Just sold an axe to a guy who had ripped an input jack out of a buddy's guitar, and the shop was giving him hints that he "totally broke it" and might be better off buying his buddy a new axe... Lolwhat? A measely input jack repair - two or three new short wires (1% of 5 bucks for a bobbin of it), 4-6 new solder joints, and two halves of a toothpic = DONE!

Well it is under warranty for a year so shop repair is free

Also I would not call 250 inexpensive for a pedal.

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

got the pedal back again for the second time now they have said no fault found. SO either they are the worst pedal techs or there is something else wrong in my setup. Power supply, cables ... I have no Idea... Plus the problem comes and goes so I have no clue what to do. I'm goanna test it out now and if it does it again I'm just goanna have to throw a stink up at the shop and try to get a replacement. I'm not very tech smart so I don't think I could replace this pedal myself

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

Leave everything else out of the chain and just have that pedal between the guitar and amp. That's a sure way to troubleshoot and eliminate it as a culprit if there is in fact no fault.

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

Well I feel stupid , it was one of my fender patch cables. I took it out of the chain and put in a different fender patch cable and wah la! volume is back when bypassed.

Lesson learned

Been there, done that! I hate that moment of realization. I always feel dumb.

Glad it's working. I've been thinking about trying one of those out. I really want my g/f to try one with her Fiddle. I think that would sound badass.

OK First off that would totally be badass ! :D

The Whammy V is such a cool tool to have on your board I guess there is a reason so many players of all styles use one.

Also that feeling I had when I plugged in the patch cable and it worked was terrible.... I feel like I wasted the techs time :(

Re: Help!! Whammy V issue!

Rule #1 of troubleshooting your pedalboard, always always always pull everything out of the chain except for the suspect pedal. Add back in one at a time.

At a gig it's not always so easy to do when time is of the essence but can be done between sets.

Smart man!

I will always do this from now on with issues. I can't believe I overlooked the simplest thing!
