Much of VH1's sonic mojo comes from the producer, not Ed. From what I understand, it's a combination of panning the dry signal to the left and the wet reverb signal to the right along with some radical post-equalization. If you listen to Ed's live tone during that era, it kinda sucks.

Yeah - the production too. I personally don't like Templeton's style. But no doubt it was a major factor. He's probably the guy that put the plate verb on there!

Back to the point. I doubt if a JB vs 59 vs 498 vs Pearly GAtes vs the 78 Custom shop vs turdbucker deelux would have mattered.

My SG with a 490t get's in the ballpark. If the 490t was a little less nasally, and the body had a little more sustain and snap, it would nail it.

Really, you just need a neutral sounding pickup that is in the PAF range. An A2 is better for early stuff, and A5 (i.e. 59) is better for 1984 stuff, but that's just tweaking.

I'm new to the world of electric guitar dissassembling and the "attempting" of reassembly. I'm just wondering if anyone could help me find the ultimate pickup to throw in my Fender lookalike to get that awesome sound of Eddie.

if you want a true EVH tone you must consider the "78" custom shop pup :dance:

How much are you looking to spend? Most PAF's will get you in the ballpark. I use a 59 and love it for that old VH type tone. I have a ton of 59 clips in my signature if your interested in checking them out to give you an idea how it sounds. There's also 5 extral clips i posted at this link.

I don't see why not...While there are more accurate things, I've got a fairly decent sound with a Paul with stock pups and my boss multi-effects. Just have to set the knobs right.

I don't either. The closest I ever got to the "brown sound" was using my Heritage 150 les paul w/ 59's through my 1987X reissue. I cannot remember how I had the tone controls set but one day I was fiddling around and realized I was getting close to the intro of Unchained...I dropped the low E string to D, tweaked my old Boss Phaser (yes I know he used a flange but they can get very close with soem fiddling) and voila

I've never got as close with any other guitar including every bolt on neck guitar I've ever owned.

I think the amp and pickup has more to do with getting that sound than the guitar itself...of course not including being Eddie

and IIRC doesnt he use a Les Paul? Or did for some of those clips? (I may be mis-remembering, but when I first found these boards I thot I saw him post something to that effect).

Regardless, he's as close I've heard.

I appreciate that man! I've thought about doing a tribute but i just never know where to find the other musicians who could pull off the other parts, especially lead vocals for Dave. I did a VH tribute about 7 years ago but the others guys just weren't into it as much as i was. Where are all the Dave, ALex and Michaels out there?? LOL

He used

a 1957 fender strat on cathedral and women in love
he also had EBMM make him a 3 single coil sig axe and i believe that peavey followed suit?
