Help with Wiring

Ok so. I took apart an old guitar to use some parts for a new one. I decided to reinstall some parts in to the old guitar to make it playable again. I installed everything correctly to my knowledge. After plugging the guitar in I have very little volume. To the point that playing with overdrive on sounds like I’m playing clean. And the sound cuts out after a second or so of playing a note. I took the parts out of the guitar and tested them with my other one and they worked fine. I took pictures of the wiring before I took the parts out and it seems like everything is where it should be.

The guitar: Squier Hello Kitty edition Strat (one HB pickup screwed directly to the body)

All grounds are good. I was very meticulous in assuring they were connected properly.

Welcome to the forum!

Have you tested the DCR of the pickup, or wired it directly to the jack to see if it is working? Post some pics, maybe we can help your sort this kitty out.

Re: Help with Wiring

I have no clue about anything about this pick up. It came with the guitar and only has 2 wires. The Pot is, or should be, 500k. Wiring the pickup straight in to the output jack didn’t do much.
I also think it’s worth noting that I have two pickups, both cheapo ones that came with cheap guitars, and it does the same thing, but when I plugged it all in to an Invader I have on my other guitar everything was fine. The old pickups worked just fine before I removed them. They have just been siting on a table for a month.

Re: Help with Wiring

Those terminal blocks are convenient and all but kind of makes it hard to see what exactly is going on. But maybe it's just me.

Re: Help with Wiring

This probably isn't even a wiring problem. I know that everything is connected where it is supposed to be and is connected securely. The Pot works perfectly fine when connected to the Invader in my other guitar. The only difference between the two guitars I have tried these parts in are the pickups so I'm assuming that the way these cheapo pickups are wired doesn't work with this pot but I'm not really sure why that would be the case.

Re: Help with Wiring

Fixed it. Of the last couple things I have tried something worked. 1. I had an extra piece of foil tape under the bridge off by itself. Took that out. 2. Switched the pickup back to the one that originally came with the guitar. The problem was still present till I swapped the pickups so I assume that the other pickup was just bad. Can't imagine why though. I tried out the guitar it came in and it worked fine but somewhere along the line it must have been damaged after I removed it.

Re: Help with Wiring

Actually. I know it has been awhile but I know what happened. I had shielded everything including the pickup cavity. The reason that was the problem is because the pickup was screwed to the body and to the tape which from what I understand can make the pickup not work properly or at all.
