Hendrix Amp

Re: Hendrix Amp

This information is a misnomer.

Hendrix in fact used Fender amps for his first two albums and also 'All along the watchtower'. I got that information for a 1 inch think book on Jimi Hendrix that has pictures of his amps.

Those Marshalls were used mostly on tours and were Sunn amps for a brief time.

For the most part Jimis sound was Marshalls. You are right that he did use Fenders as well as Sunn, but he only used Fenders on a few cuts on each record, not the whole album. The deal that was made with Sunn only lasted for a few shows on his first tour. But it really doesn't matter that much. He could play through anything and he would have sounded like him. When he first went to England he asked 2 questions of Chas Chandler. 1. Can I play through Marshalls 2. Can I play with Clapton.:cool3:

Re: Hendrix Amp

So anyone have any other suggestions for a lower wattage amp that will get me into hendrix-ville? Or does anybody else have an opinion of ceriatone?

Re: Hendrix Amp

Skip the 100-watt, skip the 50-watt -- look at something in the teens or twenties. Start with something that's going to give you a great clean tone with the potential for breakup at non-ridiculous volume levels. Check out the 18-watt Fender Super Champ. Seems to take nicely to pedals, and (as with most Fender amps) plays nicely with a Strat.

Re: Hendrix Amp

I'm already looking into a fender amp for other purposes. I'd like to get something with more of a british voicing, marshally. I just don't know what's out there really.

Re: Hendrix Amp

FWIW there's a review of 5 different 18-Watt clones in the Vintage Guitar mag that arrived a day or two ago. Not on the website yet, but here's the link: http://www.vintageguitar.com/default.asp (I hope you can see the reviews.)

I'd think that the right 18-watt might get you close without making your ears bleed.

I'm always leery of reviews coming from magazines that sell advertising space. I never trust the reviews that come from Guitar Player. Maybe Vintage Guitar is more objective and honest.

I agree with you! Just thought he might see 5 possible amps to investigate. Probably a dumb idea though since 4 of them use EL-84s and the last uses 6V6s.

Can't be any worse than Harmony Central, can it? ;)

We may never know the real story behind it all but I do find that VG does a good job of not putting on pom-poms for every piece of gear they review. They're not shy about saying if one amp has something over another.

The 18 watter shootout has alot of good info in it.

Re: Hendrix Amp

If you want Hendrix at bedroom or small venue levels, here's your solution. It's a VERY underrated pedal.

I played one of those before, it definatly was a pretty cool little pedal though the problem with it is that it really only had a handful of sounds and they weren't exactly the best either.

I think if you just want to do a few hendrix covers its a great way to go, but if you really want to sound like Jimi and be able to take it further, its not an ideal way to go.

Getting a good wah, octovio, and fuzzface just gives you so much more sonic flexibility as your quite limited in how the models react in the JHE pedal.

Don't get me wrong, its a fun pedal but after a few hours you sort of feel maybe you didnt get your $200 worth from it.

18 watt point to point Marshall, a few good effects and a nice strat though and man, thats just a lifetime of enjoyment there. Models just can't touch it

Maybe I should dump my subscription to Guitar Player, and start picking up Vintage Guitar.
