Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

Failing at being Gibson .... takes a certain amount of skill

They could probably run a profitable merch business selling coffee mugs and bumper stickers even if they somehow managed to continue to operate their luthiery operation at a loss

You mean like Harley Davidson? Except Harley does it right.

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

Same with a mint 1996 Gibson LP Custom Black Beauty... It ran for $2200.00 for 2 months without a single offer. I asked my friend if he was seeing it on Tampa CL site, to which he replied yes.

That's really simple: > $2k is collector money

There's far superior players for less, and for collectors, 96 just ain't exactly the dream year

So....you're stuck with wannabe-collectors with plenty.cash to burn by guitar shopper standards, but NOT as much as they actually wanted

Furthermore, you're undermined by the stores-and-web used market because they take credit, making upselling dreams a lot easier

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

Another recent Henry quote...

Apparently they had a customer pannel working on simplified designs before ch11;)

“We’ve done a lot of work on those models for eight months, so it is not something that has been impacted by our financial situation, and we expect to carry through on those plans. We’ve had excellent reception from the consumers we’ve surveyed on test panels and so on, and many of the dealers have seen these new models and been very complimentary."

At least this is talk in the right direction... but have to wonder if these customers and dealers brought competitive quality and price points into the discussion?

He thinks Uke players and girls are his customers...can't wait to see what a panel like that came up with...

I'd love to get onto one of those 'test panels'.

Harley really knows and understands their customer base...one cool gig was selling their AR in blocks for big profits...a large part of their customer base @Yuppies...very high credit ratings...HD finance would eagerly approve loans at a reasonable rate...in blocks the rate was extremely attractive to investors who saw little risk and good rate of return and were willing to pay a premium....

Yes very creative-

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

Well Harley is also loosing customers.....
All that our generations liked or craved are not the same as the new upcoming ones want!

'96 isn't a dream year? Okay, it's not a '59, but 1996 was one of the best years for the Gibson Les Paul Custom. Anyone who says different is a dunce.

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

How would you know anything about kids? Every time one shows up you tell them to get off your yard...
Correction... I tell them to get the f--k off my lawn.

Even if they did show up with a guitar, you'd tell them to check out Uriah Heap...
LOL! Coming from someone who relishes the stylings of KISS, I'll take that as a complement. :jester:

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

Interesting... And what model of Harley Davidson do you ride?

Seriously? I have a Toyota, a Takamine, and a Glock.....I'm a rice rocket fan all the way.

And for the record - Harley isn't a stunning business. I overemphasize the "Got it right" thing. But they also work the Icon model. However, as mentioned, they do a MUCH better job of being an Icon than Gibson.

Harley really does understand what they have become. They know who buys them. They know the swag is worth almost as much as the bikes. They went through their "We make expensive crap" crisis once and learned (most) of their lesson.

Gibson - not yet apparently.

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

You can't get tube distortion without walking the neighbors, you can't get speaker breakup, you don't need them for live gigs (unless for some odd reason the venue is large enough to need mics but too poor to afford them), they aren't very pleasant to work with in the studio, and so many kids are doing DI's they don't need them for that.

I recently liquidated all of my 4×12s, which took about 6 months for 4 cabs, and refuse to buy another.
I assume you're referring to power tube distortion? Not true! A 5 watt amp using 6V6 power tubes breaks-up beautifully at low volume. Speaker breakup depends on the model you're using. My Alnico Blue drivers breakup beautifully at an easily tolerable volume. If isolation is needed, isolation is employed. Sounds loads better than DI, that much is certain.

On 4x12's and DI:
Regardless of volume, nothing sounds as good as 4x12 cabinet, live or studio. The more air you can fill with sound, the better. Remember this: There's no replacement for displacement. DI is convenient, but I prefer using my trusty Shure 57's. When I think of DI, I think of those awful 80's studio recordings... Def Leppard (Pyromania), ZZ Top (Afterburner), Joe Satriani (Surfing...), etc. Granted these bands used Rockman devices, squashing the tone of a Marshall head (via attenuation) doesn't sound much better. George Lynch's Rockman tones sounded great! Why? He ran his Rockman's through Marshall Stacks, mic'ed! No DI involved.

You must understand, that some of us (especially those who started playing in the 70's) are just as much in-love with the gear as the process of writing and recording. If a 12x12 box could create the same sound as my Marshall 4x12 (which is impossible), I may buy it, but I would never liquidate my super-chunk Marshall 4x12's in favor of it. Just as a carpenter needs a hammer... the 4x12 cabinet (preferably Marshall) is a must-have. Everyone should own at least one. If not, get one! Regardless of volume, nothing sounds quite so good. :)

Agreed. Rice Rocket... lol! I own an '02 FXDWG, but my love of riding began on a highly modified 1978 Yamaha RD350. I couldn't wait for a street legal YZR500... Yamaha released a V4 RZ500, but this was not-to-be for those of us in the USA. Why? Jimmy Carter and his band of leftist EPA psychos decided that 2 stroke motorcycles were "detrimental to the environment." Nuclear power and tossing used batteries into your kitchen wastebasket was fine, just don't ride a two-stroke mo-mo... F-ing a-holes! It was then that I discovered myself, politically.

The nationally mandated 55 MPH speed limit was another leftist turd...

One thing we likely agree on Mopar - nothing smells as good as two-stroke engines burning hot in the morning!

Oh God, yes! I couldn't wait to kick that bad-boy over in the morning! Especially when the weather was cool. Damn, I miss that bike. When I sell my Harley, I'm going to track-down a Suzuki RG500. Some RZ500's did make it into the USA, but they had the heavier steel frame. Only Canada and Japan received the aluminum frame models. I've had two RZ500's and one RD400. Both were dogs compared to my modified short-stroke 350. I also had an RZ350, which I sold to Ian Ziering from the TV show Beverly Hills 90210. He called last month, to see if I wanted to buy it back? The RZ is nice, but I prefer an air-cooled 350.

Re: Henry says ukes will save Gibson- They really need an L5s and marketing 101

here ya go...$600 for a new Gibson SG...what would motivate a customer to pay 3X for a standard???

https://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid

they are their own toughest competitor....
Yeah, their lines appear to canabalize, at least at line level...

But can anyone compare and contrast the standard against the faded t? Hardware, pups and especially wood?

I imagine great guitars starting 800 to 1000, so at this price point, I imagine considerably less quality, but haven't compared and could be totally off...

Gibson does it for you:

more specific in the case of the $800 Les Paul faded vs $2,700 Standard:
