hep meh - I am looking for a simple clean & clear tube amp, 45 to 90 watteroonies

wish list specs:

  1. clean. clear. big.
  2. does it crunch or compress? no to kinda but not really
  3. knobs - not many
  4. switches - none. Other than pwr, stdby, ohms.
  5. tubes - few. But KT-88s make a great clean. Pittbull UL being my favorite clean sound. That would be exactly what I want, but, JUST that.
  6. No Hi-Watts, nor Sound Citys nor Music Mans unless they are smaller and have nowhere near the crang of their big brothers, ie no.
  7. fewer tubes than I'd find in a typical Fender from any era regardless of faceplate color
  8. like 4 tubes max if class A, or a 5th if there's a PI, tops. Total, including pre & output.
  9. KISS - simple. Sling Blade simple, mm hm. No distortion channel. Not a bunch of circuitry ya know?
  10. not a combo. A head or a lunchbox.

can't think of anything, you? I found a used King Rocket 88 in the store right now ... too much $$$. Who knows? ... maybe the fact that *exactly* what I was looking for showed up the day I decided to look for it and couldn't think of anything means something. Was looking for under a $1000 instead, may even trade a prized, modded, sweet-arse 5150.

okay, the King ain't "exactly". Pricey and fancy. But closer than anything else I can think of to what I'm looking.

I'm tempted to limit this to KT-88s but what I've exactly described is a Deliverance 60

... but I sure didn't like the Deliverance 120 very much ...

Traynor Bass Master YBA-1 (45 w)
Traynor Bass Master Mark II YBA-1A (90 w)

Clean and loud. Relatively few tubes. Bassman-Plexi vibe. Pretty standard volume and tone controls. PTP and relatively inexpensive. Head.

"There were quite a few models produced, but the most popular (and my personal favorites) were the 'simple' Fender/Marshall clones. Like most Canadian manufacturers of the day, Traynor used Hammond transformers and Marsland or RSC speakers. The Marshall clones labeled their tone controls a little different. Over to the far right of the chassis were two controls under the heading of 'Range Expander'. The 'Low' was identical to the 'Middle' control on the Bassman/Marshall, while the 'High' performed exactly like the 'Presence' control. The 'best' Marshall clone was the Traynor Mark II (YBA-1A). This 2XEL34 amplifier put out 90 watts with its high voltage power supply. Tube problems? No sir, thanks in part to the careful design of the output stage. Why Marshall didn't use these ideas, presented by Mullard themselves in 1953, baffles me. Today, these amplifiers don't command nearly the price that an equivalent Marshall will, and that's fine by me. I'd rather pay a fraction of the price for the Traynor and let the Marshall go to some rich Japanese industrialist." http://www.tone-lizard.com/Traynor_Amplifiers.htm

I'd be on the look out for a used 70's Fender Bandmaster Reverb head or Showman-Reverb head. Even if you don't use reverb, the reverb circuit adds some balls to the tone...even with the reverb on zero.

I know you said no Music Man, but you should try one. They all have half power switches, so it's not like they're fire breathing monsters, unless you want them to be.

RD100 would be a good fit for you.

Best cleans you can get outside of a Fender amp, cause it was a Leo Fender company.

Re: hep meh - I am looking for a simple clean & clear tube amp, 45 to 90 watteroonies

I had a late 60's Bandmaster (no reverb) that sounded beautiful. I used an old original LPB-1 booster to add even more to the tone and volume. Great amp. Never had any problems with it, never had any complaints, just love. Traded it in on a Fender 400PS (435 watts RMS tube power). Louder than a jet engine at 4 inches and heavier too.

Only thing I have EVER regretted about that Bandmaster was getting rid of it.

You basically described my silverface Fender Bassman.

Two channels...four inputs...three knobs per channel, i think there are 3 preamp and 2 power tubes. Loud and clean, gets kinda fuzzy as you crank it up, loves pedals...

i would just be looking for any all-tube unit from the era when amps were simple, or a reissue thereof.

What about just getting a poweramp like the VHT or Mesa?

Clean
Few knobs
KT88
ect.

It took you just over three hours to pull the trigger. Me thinks you've been studying for a while and really didn't need much input! :friday:

met the amp yesterday. Never heard of King Amplification before.

didn't plug in until today.

walked in yesterday, and was about to ask about a dual kt-88, and then saw one. This one.

(edit : also, watch for a.m and p.m, it was a *little* more than 3 hours ... ha ha)
