Facts are facts, hence the consistency year to year. I appreciate your keen eye for noticing that. SG's are a much more refined instrument and are rarely seen being played by guys with cowboy hats.

I own a Telecaster and have tried a couple of SGs. I do not like how thin the body of an SG is compared to the telecaster. I am more comfortable playing a telecaster than an SG, Strat or Les Paul. I love how percussive the telecaster is. Love the tone. Love the looks. :)

Extremely well said. Usually the whole John-Mayer-mankini-avatar forces me to reflexively reject anything and everything you write. But your wisdom in this instance is overwhelming, and I salute you for it.

stock instruments are more comparable than dream instruments. anyone can put HBs in a tele and put it in the ring with an SG. I think we should go down the list of features:

Headstock: Apparently 'straight pull' is the way to go. You avoid unwanted friction issues with the nut. I have played Gibsons with a 3:3 set up and had no issues, and have played Teles with interesting string friction...but from the string tree! It really matters on a microscopic level, but in a vacuum, I'd say tele wins.

Neck: I will not talk about wood. Wood as a factor is beaten to death. I think feel is more appropriate. First of all, I don't have huge hands. I always gravitate towards shorter scales and thinner necks. Gibson's 60s shape is great (for me.) But there is always an oddball S or T style that is built for people like me. Too bad it's only an oddball occurrence which only leaves me to stick with the 60s profile and short scale. Yes, I know, feel is subjective...but you have access all the way up to the 22nd or even 24th fret with the ability to wrap your thumb around the neck on the SG. SG wins here.

Body: Body shape is kind of divided into 2 schools. Single cut and double cut. Who cares. The only thing that matters on a body is if it's ergonomic. Old teles did not have arm bevels and contours to make life easier the way the SG does. While the SG can be annoying with neck dive (if you play Jimmy Page style), it didn't dig into your arm, or weigh your shoulder down. Electronics wise, the tele was a bit smarter. tone and volume swells were not hard to do. The only short coming of a telecaster is in the bridge. Intonation on the bridge is nearly impossible. TOM bridge is a much smarter design. Single coil v. Humbucker is irrelevant. It's like fighting over tone wood.

In short: The SG wins via design evolution. I understand that on the SEYMOUR DUNCAN FORUM, more people are going to gravitate towards the tele because of Seymour's work on the Tele...Gib. wow...case and point right there. Seymour needed to upgrade the Tele into a more modern design (TOM and Humbuckers) Because wood and scale length is highly subjective you have too look at actual design. Is it still apples and oranges? well yes, if you are talking about maxed out versions of both contender. But in any day scenario it's more like Corvette vs Horse and buggy. Is the corvette better? Yes. Is it more important? No.

I don't play favorites this is just my 2 cents

The strat/superstrat is the best guitar shape of all time

I agree because these are guitars designed in the 50s/60s. Comparing them is like comparing two cars made at that point in time - it's virtually pointless because most modern cars will be better, as are most more modern guitars better versions of the early electric guitars.

I've long regarded them as the two most versatile (and *****in') guitar designs. If I had to seriously pare down my gear to the bare essentials, I'd be left with an SG Standard and an Esquire, both in stock configuration. To me, it isn't an either/or thing; they compliment each other perfectly.

Looks shouldn't be so decisive, but I will never get an SG just because it looks like garbage to me. Cannot stand it, unfortunately.

I prefer standard SGs to standard Teles but i have played some amazing teles
