I've got to admit I've never been a great fan of G&L guitars in terms of aesthetics. But that thing looks gorgeous.

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

that's tastey!!!!

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

the bridge looks killer on that thing, im not too much a fan of blue flame tops (personal preference) but it looks like it would sound awesome

the neck p'up doesn't say duncan on it though?

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

love the asat dlx's

there was a killer blackburst one a ebay the other day.

Nice guitar!

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

Boy that's purty! I'm looking at a couple of ASAT's right now.

Question #1: do all models of G&L guitars have medium jumbo frets and NOT the little vintage style Vintage Fender frets?

Question #2: What's the diff between the neck numbers G&L uses? I see #2 necks talked about alot and not much mention of other numbers.

Question #3: What determines whether G&L uses swamp ash or alder on thier ASAT? Is there a differant model number for swamp ash vs. alder?

Thanks!

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

Very nice, Curly! I bet those PG's rock in that guitar!

yeah, good questions!

1. Note that Medium Jumbo (Dunlop 6100) frets are standard on all G&L instruments, except Vintage frets for the George Fullerton Signature Model (Dunlop 6230).
2. the neck descriptions are here:
options
go to options --- (I can't give you the direct link from IE on sites that use frames!)
here's a synopsis:

Guitar Necks
Neck/ Radius/ Width at Nut
#1 - 12" 1 5/8"
#1V (V-shaped rear) - 12" 1 5/8"
#2 - 7 1/2" 1 5/8"
#3 - 12" 1 3/4"
#4* - 12" 1 11/16"

* Invader models equipped with Floyd Rose Vibrato are NOT available with any neck other than the #4 neck standard on Invader models.

3. in general, G & L uses "premier" finishes on ash, standard finishes on alder - "premier" means some of the bursts and the transparent finishes, but check their finish section for specifics. Custom orders may vary, though.

I love G&Ls! I want an Invader or an Invader XL so much, but I am so broke. I doubt I could get credit extended to me anywhere.

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

g&l's are great guitars. ive played lots of em and i like em, my bass player played an l2000 for a while and it was great

Curly - you are an evil man and that is a killer axe :D

Every time I see that bridge, I wish there were some way to buy one. It looks a lot like Hipshot's string-through but there's a metal block underneath that sits in a tightly-routed cavity to increase sustain & sound transfer.

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

Most Tele's and Strats don't have a one piece body. But I have noticed that the guitars I tend to keep, like my '63 Strat and my '54 Tele, have the glue line somewhere other than the exact middle of the guitar. That means the glue line does not pass through the neck pocket of the guitar. Seems like almost every fancy or premium G&L I see has the glue line passing right through the neck pocket.

Some might argue that it makes no difference...but I suspect it does.

I sold a beautiful light swamp ash ExStrad made in the now legendary but now defunct Fender Japan Custom Shop of the 80's just last year that should've sounded great...but it didn't. It was made of book matched swamp ash with the glue line going right through the neck pocket.

But boy...does that blue ASAT ever look killer!

Chip,
I've owned a couple ASAT Specials, and they had no lack of sustain, for sure.

Lew,
I've never heard that one before!

I couldn't tell if that was a glue line or a reflection ...

I just like blue guitars, plus I hadn't really noticed before that those models use a set of PG's ... offhand, I can't think of another production guitar that does, but I'm sure there might be.

anyway, it just looked nice to me, but probably a little more than I'd want to pay. :)

The glue line through the neck pocket thing has been mentioned before...not just by me.

I tried to score that candy apple red ASAT you turned me onto but got beat in the last few seconds of the auction. I thought I had it. Oh well...the owner said it had little vintage frets...I like medium jumbos anyway. But thanks for the tip! Lew

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

Lew,
bummer!
I thought the ASATs had jumbo frets, like it said on their site, but oh well.
I really like the frets on my Legacy, but I know some players don't like those 6100's ... comes down to personal taste again.

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

Hey, I used to own that guitar, great piece! The neck pickup is a 59', the bridge pickup is a pearly gates, thus explaining why there is not writing on the neck pickup. When I bought the guitar (I bought it used) everyone thought the pickups were a 59' and a JB (standard issue for the ASAT deluxe). I got it home, played it and just felt the bridge couldn't be a JB - I have a hamer with a JB in the bridge and they sounded different. I thought is was the wood, but just for the hell of it the next time I did a restring I checked the pickup and sure enough it's was a pearly gates. Sounded awesome, played like a dream, but I was gassing for a Heritage H535 - couldn't pass up the deal so I traded it "up" for the Heritage. Mystery solved!

hey Riff,
cool!
you've probably seen me say several times that Buffalo Bros is my favorite store - low key, no nonsense, good stuff, and good deals. I haven't even bought from them, but I go in from time to time to check out the G & L's and Taylors.

I just wondered ... how did you like dealing with them? I know they have a terrific "100% trade up" policy.

Peace

Re: here's a nice blue ASAT with 2 Pearly Gates

you had to mention that buffalo brothers site again didn't ya...!?!?!

now my small amp g.a.s. has a friend...ASAT g.a.s.!!!! :banghead: :argh:
