Here's a question for you about pedals!

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

And here is what I PRACTICALLY use on a 40 song set of 80's metal:

RV-3 set for long delay
DD-3 set for a short delay
Digitech Chorus Factory set for TC Chorus
An old Washburn Flanger - subbing for a Wah
And A tuner

I have a Phaser, and two dirt boxes on there, mostly for the pure excess of it all.

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

^^
A tuner and various flavors of gain. One of these days I may get a phaser or delay. Or just a multi function stomp that I can dial in as needed. Love that TS-7.

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

12 posts and already trying to stir up $h!t? I like you….

A) the maximum amount of pedals on a board
- Only limited by the size of the board. I recommend a Line driver every 25 or so pedals though….

B) the types of pedals needed to play your style
- Depending on which of my styles; None to many
* Classic rock - Reverb, if it isn't on the amp already
* 80's Metal - None, or a chorus, or a chorus and a delay, or a Rat and a chorus and a delay….this can go on and on and on
* Acoustic (yes, I have an acoustic pedal board!) - Monte Allums Compressor, Zoom Modeller, Acoustic exciter + Delay and Chorus!!!!
Tuner assumed, but not counted

C) modified or unmodified? Which is better (I understand this one only really can apply to certain pedals but I thought it's be an interesting ask)
- It really depends on which sounds best

D) the best pedal you have ever owned, this is pretty wide varied question I know, but I feel it's give people with a similar style an idea for of what they can look into
- Three way tie: MXR Micro Amp, Boss DD-3, and Stamps-Drive-O-Matic

Haha I thought it'd be an interesting topic to hear what the opinions of different people can be, the stiring may just be an added bonus ;)

sounds like you've got a pretty interesting set up though Aceman! I like the sound of that acoustic board! :)

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

A) I try to limit my boards to six or under. There is a tiny something lost when A/Bing the clean signal with and without pedals no matter how good your buffers are/how many true bypass pedals you're using. The more pedals, the more you lose.
B) I play a wide variety of genres . . . classic rock, reggae, funk, jazz, etc.
C) Neither is better. I use pedals stock if they do what I want stock (595Q wah pedal for example), I mod them if they don't (modded a small stone phaser to sound passably like a univibe).
D) I couldn't pick a best pedal. I find that fuzz (home built germanium fuzz face), delay (SD Deja Vu), univibe (small stone phaser with capacitor mod), and some kind of wah (Mad Professor Autowah or 595Q traditional wah) are all pretty essential for what I like to play.

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

I like the sound of that acoustic board! :)

Turns a cheap Ovation Celebrity into Acoustic Awesome.

Tuner > Compressor > Zoom (set for D28 model) > Chorus > Delay > Exciter > PA/Amp

Comp/Model/exciter on all the time

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

A) No real maximum. Just ask Tim Mahoney from 311
B) for me I could not do without Fuzz, low gain always on boost/drive, Whammy, Octaver, Delay and univibe.
C)No preference for either....Whatever works and sounds good.
D) best pedal I have ever owned has got to be my Whammy V only because it does so much. Downtuning to C Standard and Baritone, Pitch bend up 1 octave in classic mode and the Harmony modes are always fun to mess with.

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

I'm a big pedal fan, I know some guys hate effects but all those shiny LED's drive me crazy and I know there's plenty of guys that'd argue less is more and there are obvious advantages and disadvantages to using lots or going minimal, so here's the idea, I'm obviously quite new round here and I wanna get to understand both sides of this argument (and I'm sure it'll cause some form of argument) I wanna know what you guys think:
A) the maximum amount of pedals on a board
B) the types of pedals needed to play your style
C) modified or unmodified? Which is better (I understand this one only really can apply to certain pedals but I thought it's be an interesting ask)
And finally D) the best pedal you have ever owned, this is pretty wide varied question I know, but I feel it's give people with a similar style an idea for of what they can look into

Maybe this too much of strange question or no one will take any interest in it, but I'd like to get into the heads of all parties and get the pros and cons of everything
Thanks for looking guys!

Dastill

A - I don't think there's really a maximum. Although the more you have, the more points of failure, and the larger chance of noise or other signal degradation. I think I have about a dozen pedals on my board.

B - I play a variety of styles, but mainly indie rock. I think at a minimum, I'd want an OD, fuzz, tremolo, and delay.

C - This totally depends on the pedal. I like vintage pedals, but sometimes they aren't very practical to use on pedalboards, so I send them off to Analogman to give them the treatment.

D - My favorite pedal is probably my ram's head Big Muff Pi. It's ridiculous. I've retired it off of my gigging board though. It's a studio use only pedal now. Runner up would probably be my script logo Phase 90 which has remained on my board since I got it 12 years ago.

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

A) imho there are already lots of different tones you can get from the guitar and amp by changing your playing dynamics, tone, volme and gain that I usually enjoy more. If possible I would preffer a programable multi-modulation with presets rather than jumping around pedals, this distracts me from playing.
B) Just a little bit of these from time to time: Delay, chorus, reverb and Wah. I can't deny I can like many other effects but in my own conception of songs effects are just "cameos" and not "main actors".
C) I have not tried modified pedals.
D) I don0t have many but I really like my Fulltone PlimSoul so far.

I never liked doing my own homework either, but I've always liked th... "*SQUIRREL*"...

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

My view on pedals is very different depending on the situation. With a band I will have a board with only what I need and know I will use for the songs we play. But at home I like having everything available to me for when the mood strikes. So really I am equal parts "as few as possible" and "ass many as possible".

Live I basically have been using a boost, gate, chorus, and delay (plus a tuner but that doesn't count). At home I have wah, fuzz, more drive pedals, phaser, flange and multiple delays available to me.

I'm open to mods, not necessary by any means though. If it does what I want, I use it. If not, I find something that does.

My favorite pedal at the moment is my Carbon Copy. So many possibilities with a good delay pedal.

Re: Here's a question for you about pedals!

If I could krank my amp, I would probably drop some dirty boxes out of my pedalboard but, even in that situation, some dirty boxes (or some EQ pedal) could change the grain and distortion character, for more versatility.

After having small to extra big pedalboards, I think I love to have following pedals:

* TUNER (in my case, Peterson Strobostomp Classic)
* WAH (in my case, Real McCoy RMC4 Picture Wah)
* BUFFER / BOOSTER (just to correct the lose of tone for a long run of cable, in my case Wampler Decibel+)
* VIBE (It seems to sound better before overdrives, in my case Dry Bell Vibe Machine V1)
* OVERDRIVE 1 (just to put the amp on tube break boundary, in my case Jetter JetDrive)
* OVERDRIVE 2 (stacked with OD1, to push the tube into Hard Rock territory, in my case Jetter JetDrive)
* HI-GAIN DISTORTION (in my case, Mesa boogie Throttle Box, but it can change)
* VOLUME PEDAL (to be able to control the overall loudness once the sound was processed, in my case Boss volume pedal, pasive)
* CHORUS (very occasionally, in my case Strymon Ola)
* REVERB (my amp hasn't, in my case Strymon BlueSky)
* DELAY (in my case Strymon El Capistan)

I could add a FUZZ, if I found one that I really love. I gave up my seeking for a long while.
I could add a Phaser or a Flanger but, those, I use the less.

This would count for the maximum pedals I would load in my pedalboard (up to 15?)
