My Genz-Benz El Diablo 100 is a very tight amp, so tight in fact that somtimes it seems as though it just doesnt have any 'give' to it. I hope you guys understand what I mean by this, it feels like im working to get it going?

Its a little hard to explain and its not really somthing you can hear, but you can feel it.

Any suggestions about how I can solve this, I was thinking an overdrive might help somewhat but im not sure. Advice would be helpfull.

Thanks!

Re: heres my problem, how do i fix it.

i know exactly what you mean. that 100 is a killer amp, but like my jvm, it craves loudness. those heads have that 50watt switch, and it must be an improvement over the 100 watt mode in that respect. even then, the louder it gets the better it sounds.

the 60c, which i have, is actually a little warmer and crisper sounding than the 100 watt. i don't know if you have the combo or the head, but they're both extremely loud and powerful amps.

there are several things i've discovered about this amp. too much eq on one of the knobs can throw the feel out of whack. turn the attack level down. i see people using attack on full and i don't personally like the way it feels or what it does to the sound that much if it's all the way up.

engage the compression feature, back off the gain just a bit, and keep the contour between 10-12 o'clock. personally though, i like it with the gain at 3 o'clock and no compression. i keep the contour at 10 o'clock and the attack at 10 o'clock when i use it.

another thing i noticed is the contour vs. the eq controls. i find this a bit tricky, that's why i think the sweet spot on the contour for me is 10 o'clock. i don't scoop mids.

do you use reverb? a higher setting on the reverb master control and lower setting on the channel reverb changes the dynamics of hte reverb.

personally, it takes me about 20 minutes to warm up and get my pick hand going. if you're referring to the initial playing of hte amp, then i can see what you mean too because i always feel like there's an acclamation period with that amp every time i turn it on.

then again, i read somewhere that david gilmour never uses the same amp settings from day to day because each day it changes a bit or something like that. maybe that has something to do with it. i'm no expert though of course.

wll ive had the amp two yrs now, its not that i cant play it, its just 'one of those things' that a little bit of a bother.

when i go home at xmas ill see if the explorer works any better, i was thinking it could be the iommi's so we'll see

I too have the 60-watt version but unfortunately I don't know what you're referring to by "tightness." Can you explain better? The only thing I could think of relating to a "tight tone" may be the tube contour switch. All the way left gives a loose, flabby sound. All the way right offers a crisper, I suppose "tighter" tone.

Re: heres my problem, how do i fix it.

i dont mean the tightness of the amp, but how it isnt 'loose to play'

Sorry, I'm still not totally understanding. Maybe you're speaking Canadian? ;)

HEY!

It could be the pu or maybe you dont get it cause youre using 6l6's in yours. i dont know, i want to try a few things

Actually I gave it some more thought and maybe you're experiencing the same thing I am. Sort of a lack of overall dynamics? Can it can be difficult to wrestle artificial harmonics and some "spankier" tones from it? If that's the case I'm gonna try a Tubescreamer. In fact I have a new one sitting here right now and I was just gonna go downstairs, hook it up and do some experiments. So what am I doing in front of the computer? Good question...
