Here's to Artie and the 59/DD hybrid!!

So I finally got around to setting up my Hamer Special FM with the 59/DD hybrid I got from Artie. I tossed it in the neck paired with the Brobucker in the bridge. This combo is a home run in the best way. We all know how well the Brobucker turned out. The 59/DD hybrid is the perfect compliment. It's hot enough to balance, but not too hot for the neck position. It stays clear and articulate, yet retains the natural warmth I want out of a neck pickup. The cleans are nice, but for me it really shines under gain. I wish I could spend more time with it. But I've got 4 midterms this week. So, I'll have to wait a little longer.

Thanks again, Artie. :thanks: :beerchug: :yourock:

I'm glad that worked out for you. Your comments are right in line with what I observed. I like it clean, but for some reason, it just screams under gain. Even the artificial kind I get with my modeler.

btw - I was just the "grunt" in this project. BachToRock was the brains, and you did material acquisition. ;)

Here's the specs of the four we made. The DD/59 got A5's:

Travis got the top two, and I got the bottom two.

Yeah, I am itching to try the A2 59/CC hybrid. I've just been so busy with exams I haven't had a chance. I'm lucky I got time for the 59/DD. If it sounds anywhere near as good as that one, I'll be more than happy.

Its even better. The cool thing about this pair is how good they sound together. I just put mine into one axe to test them. I believe I'll leave them together. Its one of the best "combo" sounds I've heard.

Yea, what magnet did you use? I just tried a ceramic mag in a 59 (7.8K) and it is aggressive and it slightly boosted the mids. The highs are almost violent. I guess you could call it a pissed off 59. I like it. I'd be interested in hearing the 59/DD hybrid with either mag.

Did you see my chart above? A5. ;)

I tried an A4 in a 59 and an A5 in a Distortion neck. The A4 59 is fading from memory, but the A5 DDn was smoooth. Very jazzy. But the DD/59/A5 is even better. Not sure why, but it seems to have a bit more "character". Not sure why.

Artie, Did you try the DD/59 in the bridge at all? Also I'd be curious how that hybrid would sound with the large ceramic magnet as well.

Yes. When I first made these four, I put the two DD/59's in my Predator, and the two CC/59's in my Patriot. These are both the same guitar except for the Kahler trem in the Predator. The DD/59 was outstanding in the bridge. Imagine how a 59b sounds. A bridge pickup, by virtue of its position, always tends to be a little bright. The extra windings of the DD coil mellowed it perfectly. It had a nice high-end, but no shrillness at all.

If I get the gumption, I may try doing the ceramic mag swap. The problem is, I'm enjoying this guitar so much, it will be hard to "mess" with it again. But I'll try. :)
